Position Summary

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is seeking a candidate to serve as Vice Chair for Education suitable for appointment at the senior rank of Associate Professor or Professor. This position will report directly to the Chair of the Department. The successful candidate will hold a doctorate degree with leadership experience in education, clinical service, research, and/or administration. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership in education with excellent communication skills.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Oversee program directors for psychiatry residency and fellowships, medical clerkship, clinical psychology internship, forensic psychology fellowship, Perinatal & Reproductive Psychiatry fellowship, and the development of other training programs to ensure all educational programs meet or exceed all compliance standards and policies that govern them, including regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee maintenance and enhancement of processes, technologies and systems for reporting trainee and faculty educational performance.
  • Stay apprised of changes in healthcare and biomedical science as relates to education and adapt programs/curriculum/policies/etc.
  • Stay apprised of UNM School of Medicine policies and operations related to education and adapt practices.
  • Work with Chair to review goals and accomplishments and set initiatives as well as redefining the scope and direction of the Vice Chair for Education responsibilities.
  • Oversee faculty development activities related to education, including mentorship of trainees and faculty, effective teaching, evaluation and feedback. Promote faculty awareness of institutional and national opportunities for development of educational skills.
  • Participate in search committees to recruit new faculty, orient new faculty to roles and responsibilities in education and teaching, provide support to faculty who have a strong interest in medical education, and work with program directors and educational leaders to recognize outstanding teaching performance.
  • Support and participate in department education-related committees, providing support to committee members to help the committee reach its goals.
  • Ensure education programs function consistently with department values, especially in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Clinical Activities to include responsibilities for evaluating and treating patients, including clinical and didactic supervision of learners.
  • Align departmental education efforts with New Mexico behavioral health workforce needs
  • Support interdisciplinary education efforts across psychiatry and psychology training efforts and collaborative behavioral health education activities with nursing, social work, and counseling programs
  • Explore opportunities for external funding to enhance departmental educational activities
  • Oversight of departmental continuing education activities


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:



  • MD or equivalent, or PhD or equivalent;
  • Suitable for appointment at the senior rank of Associate Professor or Professor;
  • Evidence of strong academic leadership experience;
  • Educational, teaching and supervision experience with residents, fellows, medical students, psychology interns and other trainees;
  • Clinical experience, minimum 5 years;
  • Licensable in New Mexico;
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • A demonstrated commitment to leadership in Education;
  • Evidence of strong communication skills;
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
