DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes the expansion of the student health and well-being center under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women's health and specialty care for a student body of over 42,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

Greet and assist patients in a large multi-physician clinical practice. Verify eligibility, check-in and guide patients in accessing various services at Student Health Service. Measure vital signs, visual acuity, height and weight as required. Schedule appointments via computer. Arrange referrals, answer phones, inform patients of test results, providing education regarding health maintenance. Maintain confidentiality. Directly assist physicians/nurse practitioners/registered nurses with diagnostic procedures. Administer injections and perform TB skin testing, ear lavage and electrocardiograms as requested. Record patient data in charts, clean and stock patient care areas, sterilize instruments. Assist in other areas of the clinic including COVID vaccine and test site operations as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Medical Assistant Certification.

  • Current certification in basic CPR.

  • Proficiency at performing basic medical/technical procedures, i.e. vital signs, crutch-fitting, set up and assist with medical procedures, instrument sterilization techniques, administer injections and PPD skin tests, perform ear lavage and electrocardiograms.

  • Knowledge and use of medical terminology and basic medical equipment.

  • Skill to write/record patient data legibly, completely and accurately.

  • Knowledge and meticulous use of sterile technique

  • Knowledge and practice of body substance isolation techniques

  • Skill at providing health education re: commonly ordered lab tests and/or procedures; common cold prevention and treatment, blood pressure norms and factors that influence blood pressure

  • Ability to orally communicate information clearly in English in a warm and helpful manner, in person and by telephone

  • Ability to work under pressure calmly and efficiently, coping with variable workloads, and a variety of health care providers

  • Demonstrated flexibility to work in different areas with changing tasks and priorities, as well as interruptions

  • Skill to coordinate and prioritize many diverse activities and requests

  • Operating knowledge of computer scheduling, information retrieval and data entry

  • Skill to operate multiple line telephone

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical records management

  • Ability to follow directions and work as team member

  • Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.

  • Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Proficiency with use of standard business equipment, computer technology, online programs and software, including MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other electronic software and resources.

  • Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis.

  • Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, and demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to actively foster a positive, welcoming climate, and value, include and support all in the UC San Diego community.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to foster the best possible working and learning environment.

  • As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.

  • Working knowledge of adolescent health concerns and immunization needs
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on clinical or business needs, as determined by department, including evenings and weekends.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $57,671 - $57,671 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.62 - $27.62

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
