Job Summary

Under supervision of the Large Animal Critical Care Supervisor provide routine and intensive nursing care in the Large Animal ICU, NICU and Isolation units. Perform patient monitoring, treatments, basic laboratory tests, maintain unit readiness, restock supplies, and provide infectious disease control and sanitation according to Large Animal Clinic protocols. Provide technical support to other Large Animal Clinic services.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • No educational requirement.
  • Experience monitoring patient vital signs and administering PO, IV, SQ & IM medications.
  • Extensive experience handling, restraining and working with horses (sick, healthy, sedated and fractious.)
  • Experience with medications, drugs, and fluids commonly used in horses and performing mathematical calculations to calculate doses.
  • Experience with equine, husbandry, anatomy, behavior, and basic physiology to identify and describe abnormal physical signs and appearances.
  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, veterinarians, students and staff.
  • Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals, and using problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience working with other livestock (ex: cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, and camelids).
  • Experience with routine laboratory tests performing PCV, TP, electrolytes, blood gases, glucose, osm, COP, BUN, creatinine, WBC, urinalysis, fibrinogen estimation, colostrum specific gravity, equine blood type-agglutination test diagnostic sampling, and understanding normal values.
  • Skill to perform emergency care procedures & provide technical assistance during life threatening situations according to established protocols and to manage various treatment apparatus i.e. fluid therapy catheters, urinary catheter, nasogastric tubes, IV infusion pumps, blood pressure monitors, recording patient behavior, bodily functions using appropriate medical terminology and placing IV catheters and nasogastric tubes.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.Work occasional overtime as a result of emergency situations.Working hours are variable and include primary and on call shifts (day, swing, and grave), weekdays, weekends, holidays and academic vacations with emphasis on grave (overnight) shifts. Work weeks may include varied shifts throughout the week/weekend.If scheduled on call", must be able to report to work within 45 minutes following call.This position may at times, require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present, including zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals and radioactive patients.At times work alone at night in isolated areas and travel through dark areas of the clinic compound.Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, where exposure to bodily fluids and waste from domestic farm animals may occur.
