Job Summary

Applies skills as a seasoned clinical applications professional to projects of medium size at all levels of complexity, or portions of large projects.

Clinical Systems Training is responsible for all aspects of the Electronic Health Record (EPIC: APeX- Advancing Patient-Centered Excellence) for UCSF hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. The APeX/Epic - Trainer will work in collaboration with the APeX-Epic application teams and clinical/business operations to develop a curriculum to provide training support to a variety of end users, including front-end users, revenue cycle, physicians, nurses, and other users. This position will focus on training and supporting ClinDoc and other clinical applications. Trainers will work in multiple locations, including all UCSF Medical Center locations, Benioff Children's Hospitals-Oakland and San Francisco, the UCSF campus, and community affiliate partners spread throughout the Bay Area.

The APeX Trainer utilizes Epic skillset to support one or more of the following APeX applications:

  • ClinDoc Application Certification
  • Training Environment Build (TED) Certification
  • Curriculum Certification
  • Other applications depending on business needs, (list below)

The Apex Trainer must also achieve UCSF credentialing in one or more of the following training areas in order to support ongoing new hire training and other training initiatives:

Epic Clinical Applications: Ambulatory, Ambulatory Willow, Anesthesia, Optime, Orders, ClinDoc, Stork, Willow, Beacon, Kaleidoscope, Radiant, HOD, Home Health

Epic Revenue Cycle Applications: Prelude, ADT/Cadence, HB/PB, HIM, Optime Scheduling
  • Other Epic applications as needed

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $97,948 - $180,027 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Clinical Systems and Health Informatics are responsible for all aspects of the clinical and business software applications of UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. This includes the Electronic Health Record (APeX), which supports the clinical, revenue cycle, and clinical operational functions of the health system and its affiliates, and approximately ninety-five other software applications involved in patient care and operations.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Three years of related work experience
  • Broad and/or in-depth knowledge of 1-2 areas of focus in clinical applications specialty area(s). Knowledge of systems and functions, including design, development, implementation, user support and training, maintenance, quality assurance, and system testing and evaluation.
  • Strong problem-resolution skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively, train, support, and work collaboratively with users of clinical information systems at all professional and technical levels.
  • Detail oriented, with proven organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and see projects through to completion on deadline.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical application users in a specific, clear, and concise manner.
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge in documentation and reporting, with the ability to design and execute tests, analyze system performance data, and produce substantive reports and analyses.
  • Ability to work with senior staff and managers, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, policy, and performance.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Clinical License of RN, MA, or other Tech license/certification
  • Epic credentialing or achievement of Epic credentialing in Epic applications upon hire is strongly preferred
