Senior Technical Advisor, Climate Change and Health

Overall Responsibilities:

MSH is seeking to hire a Senior Technical Advisor to address the impacts of climate change on health systems and services especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

You will bring expertise in shaping technical approaches that strengthen health systems' climate-readiness and resilience to ensure availability of and accessibility to essential health care. You will advise our teams on how local health systems can address the impacts of climate change, assess their climate vulnerabilities, prepare to respond to climate change, including to new and emerging health threats, morbidities and mortality resulting from climate change. You will develop climate and health technical strategies, tools and guidance for public and private sector partners working in the health sector, and strengthen the needed skills and capacities of our own staff as well as counterparts to address the impacts of climate change and improve health systems resilience.

Location: Flexible, with preference for candidates who are based in LMICs

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Project design and implementation (25%)

  • Support projects with climate related activities such as climate mapping, developing an annual climate plan, identifying ways to embed climate resilience into ongoing activities, and promoting climate awareness among the project staff
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and learning of interventions and projects addressing the climate and health nexus
  • Contribute to adapting and updating MSH tools and approaches to include climate change issues, for instance, by developing a climate "module" of the LDP/LMG Accelerator or including climate considerations in supply chain management, preparedness and response, and health finance approaches

Technical Strategy and Vision (35%)

  • Conceptualize and develop tools and interventions that will address the impact of climate change on the health sector
  • Assist with developing health sector and community solutions to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on the health sector
  • Develop and advise on appropriate, globally recognized indicators/metrics of health systems and community resilience to climate change
  • Make use of multisectoral solutions and tools for climate related surveillance and data for health
  • Contribute to the development/refine/update MSH's conceptual framework for climate and health
  • Assist with internal skills and expertise development on climate and health
  • Support external advocacy and engagement on climate and health

Business Development(40%)

  • Participate in new business development (BD) by serving as the Technical Strategy Lead and/or a Technical Contributor in on assigned proposals.
  • Develop/update corporate capabilities statements and other BD tools/resources to assist teams in designing proposals that have a strong climate components.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Strategy, Business Development and Partnerships (SBDP) team and leadership to map and track relevant funding opportunities, develop Bid Decision Rationales, keep Opportunity Records in SalesForce up-to-date and complete
  • Partner with SBDP in scanning the market and conducting research on the competitive landscape and incumbent performance in order to identify changing funding trends and potential opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Minimum of a Master's degree in relevant subject

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • At least 7 years' experience working on climate change issues in LMICs, preferably in the health sector
  • Experience with proposal development and technical proposal design

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Good understanding of the global tendencies and impacts of climate change, how it affects health and health systems, and of current evidence of solutions and needs
  • Knowledge of major actors and funders in climate and health globally and particularly in LMICs
  • Ability to conceptualize and develop new projects in climate and health
  • Ability and knowledge to support existing projects to incorporate climate change in the health sector particularly in LMICs

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong verbal and written English; additional languages preferred
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple time zones, with a wide variety of international and local technical experts, both virtually and in person
  • Team player, energetic, creative
  • Willing to take on additional tasks as needed

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to travel internationally up to 25%-30% of the time
  • Keyboard use, pulling drawers, lifting papers <10lbs., etc.
The expected salary range for this position is: $85,600.00 - $119,000.00 annually (U.S. locations only).
