Job Description:

The Senior Tax Specialist is responsible for all aspects of tax compliance for a large group of accounts including trusts, estates, foundations, individual retirement accounts, investment partnerships, and individual and gift tax returns. This position services clients of firm attorneys/trustees. The Senior Tax Specialist is responsible for an assigned group of non-grantor trust returns, estate income tax returns and personal income tax returns, including those of the highest complexity. This position will develop and maintain advanced tax planning strategies for our high net worth clients and is expected to serve as a significant resource for other staff members, managers, and attorney/trustees. A hybrid work schedule is available for this position.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Director, Tax Services

Location: Boston, MA

  • Conduct a review of assigned fiduciary accounts at periodic intervals throughout the year. Review is done on the tax reporting platform. Review includes transaction data and other account information to ensure appropriate tax treatment.
  • Prepare complex personal returns; including those with private equity and foreign investments.
  • Prepare all levels of fiduciary income tax returns for trusts. This will include management of an assigned group of accounts.
  • Conduct a quarterly review of applicable trust and individual accounts to determine the need for estimated tax payments. Perform calculations as needed using appropriate software tools.
  • Collaborate with staff members and adhere to departmental procedures and timelines to prepare tax reporting for assigned fiduciary accounts.
  • Maintain extremely high accuracy and responsiveness to internal and external clients.
  • Prepare federal and state income tax returns for individual clients. This will include review and analysis of all relevant data, communication with supervisor or client on items in question, completion of returns for client review and signature, and estimated tax planning for subsequent tax period.
  • Peer review of other team members prepared individual tax returns.
  • Participate in internal and external trainings to enhance knowledge of tax laws and regulations.
  • Assist and mentor junior staff members by sharing knowledge of applicable tax law and tax related software.
  • Assist with the development, improvement and implementation of processes and procedures as the need arises.
  • Lead tax planning and/or research projects related to assigned client accounts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • 7-10 years of relevant tax experience, including 3-5 years of experience in a Senior Tax Role
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Master's Degree in Taxation, CPA, EA or other professional designation preferred.
  • Experience with OneSource TrustTax software and WK Axcess Tax software preferred.
  • Ability to learn aspects of in-house trust accounting system.
  • Ability to research, learn and analyze applicable tax law rules and regulations.
  • Strong grasp of IRS Subchapter J laws and related regulations, and the ability to apply these concepts to all aspects of the fiduciary income tax practice.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments within a fast-paced environment while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to master new systems quickly.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Boston, MA: $98,185 to $140,335

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
