THE POSITION

Are you familiar with working with various types of livestock, including hogs, cattle, sheep, and goats? We are currently looking for a talented and dedicated individual to join our team as a Livestock Worker 2. In this position, you will play a critical role in providing a high level of care for animals at the Livestock Evaluation Center (LEC). The Livestock Evaluation Center is a central livestock testing station with shared direction from the PA Department of Agriculture, Penn State University, and respective species and breed associations within the state. The focus of the LEC is to conduct standard, unbiased feeding and management tests, on either individuals or sire groups, within the four major species of meat animals (beef, swine, sheep, and meat goats) to measure genetic differences. This work provides a standard protocol to test bulls, rams, and boars for economically important traits that can be used to enhance the commercial livestock industry of Pennsylvania and ultimately to provide consumers with wholesome, consistently high quality products at an affordable price.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will provide daily care of animals involved in PA's Performance Testing Programs. This includes feeding, bedding, cleaning pens, and operation of essential equipment for task. You will also assist with collecting data for the various testing programs and provide normal maintenance to facility and grounds and equipment. Duties also include providing specific animal housing services to parties renting the facility and professional interaction with the public. Interested in learning more? Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work Schedule:
    • Week 1: Saturday - Sunday 8:00 AM to 11:45 AM; Monday - Thursday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with 30-minute lunch.
    • Week 2: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

    • Two years of practical experience in general farming work or animal custody work including either lead work experience or experience in the operation of complicated farm machinery and equipment; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth school grade; or
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Additional Requirements:
    • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
