Purpose

The Operating Room Orderly will serve as a key team member throughout the cycle of care for patients in the Ambulatory Surgery Center at UT Health Austin. Duties will include room-turnover between surgical cases and procedures, assisting with patient care, transfers, assisting intra-op, pre-op, and PACU teams, and assisting with sterile processing and materials management. The OR Orderly will ensure care meets the standards of the profession, the policies and procedures of the Center and is appropriate to the needs of patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for procedures including pulling cases, case set-up, patient prep, and room turnover.

  • Provides support and patient care primarily in the intraoperative setting by assisting with duties such as patient transfers and repositioning, comforting the patient prior to and after anesthesia, and assisting the surgical team with efficiency and upkeep of the sterile environment.

  • Aids other departments as needed, such as the pre-operative and post-operative phases. Assists Sterile Processing Department with transfer of instrumentation, storage and setup.

  • Restocks surgical supplies and assists materials manager with organization of equipment and disposables. Maintains and cleans equipment according to manufacturer guidelines. Assists with annual inventory of equipment.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of two years of experience as a medical assistant or similar, in the surgical setting. CPR certified upon employment. Some knowledge of current practice of aseptic technique and sterile environments. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse multi-physician practice environment; Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with providers, staff, and patients. Basic computer skills and experience with electronic health records.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in English and Spanish. Experience in an ambulatory surgery center. Additional certifications such as: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) and proof of current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT); Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) and proof of current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and proof of current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA); National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) and proof of current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT).

Salary Range

$42,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Work hours are variable based on patient care needs but are generally Monday-Friday

  • Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time, ability to walk, some bending, stooping and stretching

  • Capability for overhead and low reaching activities

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstationUse of manual dexterity

  • Physical strength for equipment needs and patient care activities; may require frequent lifting/moving up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting/moving in excess of 50 pounds
