Research Associate, Ferris Lab, Division of Endocrinology and Department of Neuroscience

The Ferris Lab in the Division of Endocrinology and Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on projects dealing with brain cholesterol metabolism and/or insulin signaling.

Duties:

• Full-time research or scholarship at the University.
• Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.
• Supervised by a senior scholar, design experiments, conduct research, and prepare manuscripts for publication in leading journals and peer-reviewed academic conferences.
• Rodent surgery.
• Isolation and Culturing of rodent primary neuron and glial cells.
• Tissue immunohistochemistry.
• Molecular biology: Western blots, ELISA, qPCR, etc.
• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: PhD in Neuroscience or related field

Preferred Experience:

A background in lipid metabolism or insulin signaling, as well as extensive experience in conducting independent research and supervising research trainees and/or technicians is preferred. In addition, candidates should have first author publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and effective oral and written communication skills. Candidates with experience in animal research are highly preferred.
