The Director of Community Engagement is responsible for working with the Baltimore community and neighborhood organizations to develop relationships, partnerships, and mechanisms for two-way communication that will serve students and families.


Essential Functions



  • Develops and implements all components of the district's community engagement strategy, including:

    • Community engagement vision and short- and long-term strategic goals
    • Partnerships and volunteer strategy
    • Community Schools strategy
    • Youth Engagement strategy

  • Manages and coaches a small team of staff.
  • Designs and implements initiatives that align with the community engagement strategy articulated in the current FCE policy.
  • Manages the components of the district's public and private grants related to community engagement.
  • Manages relationships and represents a district with Baltimore City agencies, including the Office of the Mayor and the Baltimore City Health Department.
  • Represents City Schools at high-level public meetings - e.g., Mayor's Children's Cabinet.
  • Develops and sustains strong relationships with key community leaders on behalf of the CEO and the district.
  • Leads the district's Community Advisory Group.
  • Works with the Communications Team to communicate clearly and effectively with communities around district announcements and initiatives.
  • Works with other district offices to provide support and coaching to staff related to community engagement.
  • Oversees the community engagement specialist assigned to Operations to implement operations-based community engagement initiatives and events, e.g., 21st-century building re-openings.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.

Desired Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in education, political science, social science, or related field. The degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience implementing service programs at the community level.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including making effective public presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on team building.
  • Ability to analyze data and systems that affect neighborhoods and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-paced environment with tight deadlines and multiple stakeholder viewpoints.
  • Proficiency in using all Microsoft Office 365 applications.
