Job Summary

Senior research histologist/engineer

The Department of Neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Senior Research Histologist/Engineer. This is a hybrid office-based/work-from-home position within the United States that will produce high-quality neurohistological samples from non-human primate brains, such as cryosectioning, immunostaining, and high-resolution imaging. The role also involves developing and managing software for processing and analyzing research data, which includes creating deep learning-based programs for automatically detecting neurons and brain regions in microscopic images.

This is a hybrid office-based/work-from-home position within the United States. The employee can work remotely from within the United States, but must be able to work in the Pittsburgh office three (3) days per week.

Must have a master's degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in neurobiology, engineering, or a related field plus two (2) years of experience in a related position.

Experience must include two (2) years with: (i) handling non-human primates, such as marmosets, and administering medical and veterinary procedures; (ii) conducting tracer injection experiments, perfusion fixation, and cryo-embedding brain samples in non-human primates; (iii) performing whole-brain serial sectioning using the Tape Transfer method; (iv) applying various histological staining techniques, including immunostaining; (v) developing software for research data analysis using object-oriented programming in major languages such as Python, C++, and MATLAB; (vi) database design and management; (vii) processing and analyzing medical images, including high-resolution whole slide microscopy images (approx. 100K x 100K) and MRI images; (viii) developing web applications, such as those for lab members to manage and access research data via a web browser; and (ix) building basic electronic devices for experiments based on fundamental electrical and electronic engineering principles.

Experience can be concurrent.
