Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
PlayMakers Repertory Company (
PRC) is the premier professional theatre company of North Carolina, serving as a working laboratory for the Department of Dramatic Art and as a nationally recognized cultural destination for
UNC and the entire southeast region. PlayMakers Repertory Company strives to produce entertaining, relevant, and courageous work that tells stories from and for a multiplicity of perspectives and creates transformational impact in our immediate and extended communities.
PRC manages the planning and oversight of a 3.1 million dollar professional and educational theatre operation. This unit has a staff of about 120, which includes approximately 27 employees, 60 independent contractors, 30 work-study students, and up to 100 volunteers. Approximately 16 of these employees are seasonal employees, requiring new contracts and university personnel paperwork for each season. This unit is responsible for creating significant professional artistic programming, student and community engagement activities, and attendant fundraising endeavors. The unit functions as a program of the Department of Dramatic Art. Employees of the unit are essentially employees of the department, and the unit's budget falls under the department's budget. |
Position Summary |
The Associate Producer's primary responsibilities are to provide creative analysis, managing and execution the artistic vision for all
PRC shows, ensuring that the work performed is executed professionally and efficiently under the direction of the Associate Artistic Director (
AAD) and the Producing Artistic Director (
PAD). The Associate Producer is the principal artist that collaborates with each
PRC director to realize the production's vision/concept in partnership with the
PRC staff and guest artists. The position will provide line producing support as project manager for each
PRC production and other projects as assigned by the
PAD. The Associate Producer will oversee all casting efforts for the theatre in collaboration with the theatre's casting office in New York as well as with the resident company of actors, undergraduates, and artists in the wider region. The Associate Producer will also oversee education programming alongside the Director of Education and Engagement. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Prior experience in professional theatre with a specialization in arts administration or producing. Must have working knowledge of theatre production, dramaturgy, casting and budget management. This position requires the ability to successfully balance competing priorities, collaborate with other theatre artists, strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, coordination and organizational skills, critical thinking and interpretive skills. Demonstrated ability to work well with varied artistic and administrative staff. Strong computer skills are essential, including sound technology software, with demonstrated proficiency in Excel and Word and Outlook. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience as an associate producer or other artistic support. Experience working in higher education which includes management of diverse staff, guests, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. |
