DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision of the School Safety Officer and with daily work direction from the Fly Food Kitchen Manager, assist in preparing Drosophila media (fly food) in response to research laboratory orders by measuring ingredients, mixing recipes, and dispensing medium to vials under the guidance of the Kitchen Manager 1. Assist in plugging vials with appropriate materials, ticketing trays, and maintaining records of orders, safety, inventory, and supplies. Perform routine laboratory cleaning and maintenance tasks, such as sterilizing and washing lab glassware, clearing hallway of discard returns, and sanitizing common areas. Participate in documenting and training on facility and operational safety procedures as directed by the Fly Food Kitchen Manager. Assist in providing work direction and training to temporary staff and student assistants under the guidance of the Kitchen Manager.

Many of Division of Biological Sciences' researchers use Drosophila* as research subjects. The Division's Fly Food Kitchen is responsible for the preparation of the standard and specialized media used to feed Drosophila. This position supports this research but is not a research position.

Drosophila, a small fruit fly (genus Drosophila, family Drosophilidae), are used extensively in genetic research because of its large chromosomes.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and one year of laboratory experience OR two years of college including courses in the biological sciences; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to measure, mix, and pour fly medium of a consistently excellent quality including, but not limited to basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and hand/eye coordination.

  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals.

  • Demonstrated English language skills to follow written and oral instructions and recipes, maintain records, and communicate efficiently and effective with customers and colleagues.

  • Experience acting independently and exercise sound judgment, with the acumen and sensitivity to identify those decisions and activities which require higher level consultation and/or group collaboration.

  • Experience with Windows OS with demonstrated competency using standard business software (e.g. MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel), various web applications, and internet search tools.

  • Skill to meaningfully organize manuals and instruction notes for the quick and efficient retrieval and use by others.

  • Demonstrated ability train and provide work direction to undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage, laboratory maintenance, etc).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of efficient methods of ordering, storing, and receiving perishable supplies.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $41,551 - $48,170 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.90 - $23.07

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
