HDR is looking for a Coastal intern to join our Water Resources team in Walnut Creek, CA office. Our team is growing and have a range of challenging and innovative projects. We work within multi-disciplinary teams on projects related to coastal resiliency, coastal vulnerability assessment, coastal flooding and coastal erosion modeling, compound coastal/fluvial flooding, climate change modeling, and ensemble and statistical analysis.


In the role of Coastal Intern, we'll count on you to:

  • Offer real-world experience on exciting projects
  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs
  • Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures
  • Perform assignments under the direct supervision of a professional or Project Manager
  • Perform other duties as needed


Preferred Qualifications

  • B.Sc. degree in Coastal, Ocean, Civil Engineering (Hydraulics, Geotechnical, or Water Resources), or Environmental Engineering. Highly preferred: pursuing M.Sc. Degree in Coastal/Ocean Engineering or in Oceanography
  • Prefer at least 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Background in wave mechanics, littoral processes and sediment transport
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry with Background in coastal hydrodynamic and morphodynamic models such as: XBeach, SWAN, MIKE 21, Delft3D, and USACE models.
  • Data analysis skills including the application of Matlab, Python, etc.

Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
  • Attention to detail
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position is $23.00 to $25.00 an hour and depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.)
