Position Summary

The Assistant Dean for Clinical Education will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Office of Experiential Education (OEE) program within the College of Pharmacy (COP) at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS). This role involves overseeing the development, implementation, and assessment of experiential learning

opportunities to ensure they meet the highest standards of educational excellence and compliance with accreditation requirements. The Assistant Dean will collaborate with faculty, preceptors, and external partners to enhance the quality and scope of experiential education, ultimately preparing students for professional success in the field of pharmacy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

15% Leadership and Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for experiential education in alignment with the mission and goals of the College of Pharmacy.
  • Oversee the operational aspects of the Office of Experiential Education ensuring effective management and continuous improvement of experiential learning programs.
  • Collaborate with the Dean, faculty, and external stakeholders to identify and secure new IPPE and APPE experiential learning opportunities, sites, and partnerships, including initiating, maintaining, and ensuring compliance of all affiliation agreements.
  • In conjunction with OEE faculty and staff, serve as an ambassador for the COP in experiential teaching. The Assistant Dean will represent the department and college to external stakeholders including preceptors, state pharmacy organizations, and the Illinois Board of Pharmacy.
  • Organize, plan, and lead the RFUMS COP Preceptor Advisory Board

25% Program Development and Management

  • Implement and maintain a continuous quality improvement (CQI) program to ensure the development, maintenance, and enhancement of high-quality experiential sites, preceptors, and programs, including Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and continuous professional development of preceptors.
  • Lead the creation and updating of policies and procedures related to experiential education, ensuring compliance with Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards.

25% Assessment and Continuous Quality Improvement:

  • Implement robust assessment and quality assurance processes to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the experiential education program.
  • Conduct IPPE and APPE site visits on at least an annual basis to maintain high standards of experiential education, ensure site quality and compliance with OEE learning requirements, and address any issues promptly.
  • Coordinate the assessment of all experiential learning in conjunction with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the RFUMS COP Assessment Committee.
  • Assist in establishing formative and summative indicators of achievement in experiential courses.
  • Assist in using data in a continuous and systematic process of evaluating the outcomes of the OEE and RFUMS COP.
  • Develop and refine assessment tools to continuously evaluate the effectiveness of student learning outcomes in RFU COP experiential courses (APPEs, IPPEs).

10% Faculty and Student Engagement:

  • Provide didactic teaching within the PharmD curriculum and contribute to the development of course content related to experiential education.
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor to faculty and students involved in experiential learning.
  • Promote a culture of engagement and motivation among students, encouraging active participation in experiential learning opportunities.

5% Research and Scholarship

  • Conduct research in your research area of interest
  • Publish 1 manuscript per year, preferably as first, second, or senior author

10% Service

  • Serve on an RFU COP committee as determined by the department chair
  • Serve on other RFUMS ad hoc committee, task forces or subcommittees as needed and as determined by your Department Chair or Dean
  • Develop and maintain active service and/or leadership with the American Association of College of Pharmacy or similar professional organization

10% Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Associate Director of Experiential Education and the Scheduling and Systems Coordinator, providing guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of the Office of Experiential Education.
  • Prepare and manage the budget for the experiential education program, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Represent the College of Pharmacy in internal and external meetings and committees related to experiential education.

Conditions of Employment

Required Education & Experience

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD)
  • Currently licensed or qualified for pharmacy licensure in Illinois
  • Previous experience in experiential education, or extensive experience as a preceptor for a College of Pharmacy

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in Experiential Education
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Organized and able to prioritize, delegate, multi-task or resolve issues as needed
  • Demonstrate a positive demeanor and strong people skills when working with preceptors, faculty, students, staff in the College of Pharmacy and University, and outside colleagues or leaders
  • Skilled in providing quality educational experiences
  • Committed to pharmacy education and the advancement of the pharmacy profession
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CORE ELMs, or other platforms

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of pharmacy practice experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a faculty member at a College of Pharmacy or equivalent experience
  • Experience in directing PGY1/PGY2 pharmacy residency programs

Typical Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • This position requires in-office attendance during normal business hours.
  • Occasional travel within the local or regional setting may be required
  • Remote days may be implemented after 6 months with supervisory approval.
