Job Summary

Reporting to the ChemCentral Program Manager, the ChemCentral Supervisor oversees daily stockroom and receiving operations across multiple locations and leads a team of up to five specialists. This is a newly created position, offering a unique opportunity to shape the future of the ChemCentral program. The ChemCentral Supervisor will play a key role in initiating operations at new locations, driving the expansion of services, and ensuring seamless implementation to meet the needs of UCSF's research community. In addition to these responsibilities, the ChemCentral Supervisor will provide mentorship and guidance to team members, fostering professional development and ensuring a high level of expertise and collaboration within the team.

Work Location

This is a 100% on-site position requiring the supervisor's presence at UCSF facilities. The is a hands-on role actively managing operations, ensuring compliance, and supporting the ChemCentral program across various locations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operations Management
    • Overseeing daily operations across multiple ChemCentral locations.
    • Supervising staff in receiving, inventory management, and customer service.
    • Maintaining high standards of accuracy, organization, and cleanliness.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Ensuring adherence to chemical safety and regulatory standards.
    • Conducting regular safety training and implementing protocols.
    • Monitoring and maintaining equipment for handling hazardous materials.
  • Staff Leadership and Development
    • Recruiting, orienting, and mentoring new employees.
    • Evaluating performance, setting development goals, and facilitating training.
    • Encouraging professional growth and team collaboration.
  • Strategic Program Support
    • Collaborating with the ChemCentral Program Manager to expand facilities and services.
    • Identifying and implementing process improvements to increase efficiency.
    • Collecting data, tracking metrics, and evaluating program performance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $110k-$120k (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Research Resource Program (RRP) provides strategic planning and implementation of programs to support core facilities and other research resources at UCSF. RRP also provides administrative, operational and financial management tools and support to core facilities.

ChemCentral is a strategic chemical management program designed to create efficiency in the chemical supply chain, increase laboratory safety and chemical compliance, and bring UCSF closer to its sustainability goals. This is achieved through a series of stockroom and central receiving facilities located throughout the UCSF campuses.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a science related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3 years' experience working in a laboratory or chemical management field
  • Thorough knowledge of chemical management policies, regulatory requirements, and safety regulations
  • Knowledge of relevant internal policy and external guidelines.
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff to improve materials management services.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and lead assigned staff in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Maintains cooperative working relationships with professional and administrative staff, peers, multidisciplinary team members, management, and outside agencies.
  • Solid skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify resolutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain technical materials management concepts; actively listens, persuades, and provides advice and counsel.
  • Ability to perform commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Solid knowledge of organization's materials management application programs to troubleshoot issues and recommend improvements in convenience and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in the Microsoft Suite and use other technology, such as RFID scanners, as required.
  • Knowledge of chemical inventory management systems, such as Risk and Safety Solutions.
  • Knowledge of chemical hazards and laboratory safety protocols.
  • 3 years' experience working in a laboratory or chemical stockroom field
