Front Office Systems Engineer

The Aerospace Corporation
paid holidays, sick time, 401(k), relocation assistance
United States, California, El Segundo
Jan 16, 2025

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.

At Aerospace, we are committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace for all employees to share in our common passion and aspiration - to carry out a mission much bigger than ourselves.

Digital Innovation Division (DID) is accountable for generating and executing integrated strategies,

providing governance, and managing internal investments associated with four technical pillars that form the foundation of Aerospace's digital transformation.

The Front Office within the Digital Innovation Division is seeking a dynamic systems engineer to join our team. This critical role will establish and maintain robust engineering processes across our newly formed division. The ideal candidate will balance engineering rigor with rapid capability deployment, manage requirements, schedules, and configurations, while also supporting risk and financial management. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital engineering capabilities at Aerospace, ensuring long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

Work Model: 100% onsite or hybrid; Chantilly, Colorado Springs, El Segundo, Huntsville (or willing to travel to a SCIF as-needed).

What You'll Be Doing

  • Help instill technical discipline across the newly established DID. This includes the stand up of new systems engineering forums and processes that seek to balance engineering rigor with rapid capability deployment as well as encouraging the adoption of various SE best practices among team members where appropriate.
  • Support requirements management. Create, solicit, validate, model, trace, and prioritize capability-level requirements across DID. Ensure capability-level requirements are decomposed and allocated to DID pillars. Once requirements are baselined and assigned, track progress and conduct verification as needed. Ensure that requirement dependencies are captured across DID pillars.
  • Support schedule management. Ensure that all DID projects have executable schedules and trace back to requirements. Devise an integrated master schedule that incorporates all projects and allows the team to identify and understand dependencies so that schedule executability can be routinely assessed and monitored.
  • Support configuration management. Devise and help execute a configuration management governance structure and process that allows for recording and tracking of the DID technical baseline and managing any changes to it on an ongoing basis.
  • Support risk management. Identify, assess, and track top-level risks, issues, and opportunities across DID. Develop integrated risk mitigation strategies where applicable.
  • Support financial management. Monitor budget and actual costs incurred across DID and recommend adjustments (e.g., reallocations and reprioritizations) as needed to ensure balanced execution of DID resources across the portfolio of projects. Ensure that unfunded requirements are captured, tracked, prioritized, and presented to leadership on a timely basis.
  • Assist with the communication of programmatic status to leadership. Help create and brief cost, schedule, and performance status at periodic program management reviews to the DID General Manager and other senior Aerospace leaders.
  • Support development of digital DE architecture. Capture relevant architectural information for each DID pillar to develop and sustain an integrated functional and solution architecture across all DID that represents how Aerospace is delivering digital engineering capabilities
  • Support development of sustainment strategy for DID capabilities. Ensure there is an integrated, cost-effective approach to operating and maintaining Aerospace DE capabilities over the long-term.
  • Support outreach activities. Engage with Aerospace and government customers to understand their needs and help them understand how DID can assist them.
