Join the JAMA team as Staff Writer I and provide editorial support to JAMA's Medical News &
Perspectives department to ensure that an accurate, informative, and
interesting news section is prepared on time each week. Responsible for
pitching and writing news stories, as well as supporting section operations. This is
a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days
a week in the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Writing and Other Content Production

  • Pitch, report, and write weekly news briefs for publication in the Medical News section of JAMA.
  • Write news stories and short features as time allows.
  • Contribute to and appear on podcast and video recordings.
  • Ensure that stories are accurate, clear, coherent, and consistent in style and tone.
  • Translate medical research and topics into highly readable and interesting stories for clinicians, researchers, and the lay public.
  • Stay up to date on developments in medical science, health trends, and current events.
  • Submit graphics requests and obtain necessary patient permissions and conflict of interest disclosures from interviewees.
  • Assist the Medical News team with occasional fact-checking of articles written by staff and freelance writers.

Section Operations

  • Assist Director in managing the Medical News editorial budget by tracking assignments and payments.
  • Maintain and update billing records and process invoices.
  • Assist the Medical News team in the weekly production of the section, including processing of page proofs.
  • Update the Medical News online channel each week.
  • Create JPS records for articles, schedule in the content management system, and make updates as needed.
  • Collaborate with multiple departments to prepare content for production each week.
  • Coordinate scheduling of Medical News podcast and video recordings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or scientific field required.
  2. 1+ years of experience in health or science journalism preferred.
  3. Excellent writing and editing skills required.
  4. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills required.
  5. Well-developed skills in building and maintaining workplace relationships needed.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects within deadlines.
  7. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  8. Some evening and weekend work and travel required.

The salary range for this position is $56,100-$74,460. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration, geographical location, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
