Job Summary

The Medical Technician is responsible for producing high-quality Purity Fiber in the most cost-effective manner and according to the production plan, while maintaining excellent safety and environmental standards. Executes the plans and directives from supervision and management.

This position requires interaction with other technicians, fiber control room operators, process specialists, process engineers, Medical Rover, QC Lab, QA Department, and supervision within the Medical and fiber production organization. Interact with maintenance for work permitting. This position monitors and controls the equipment processes and production quality systems for yarn production via the DCS, MAP database, and quality systems. Teamwork is crucial to operating equipment. All work is to be performed within the ISO 13485 Quality Standards.

Essential Functions

  • Work safely and follow all applicable procedures and policies. Abides by Avient Protective Materials procedures/policies regarding security, inclusive of: employee security agreements; use of non-disclosure agreements with outside parties; control of Avient Protective Materials intellectual property limited to a "need to know" only basis; no unauthorized use of cell phones, cameras, computers or APM property; reporting security threats and incidents; proper control of APM property and keys.
  • Monitors and operates the Medical Ulteeva fiver production line, as well as monitors utilities, security, HVAC environmental equipment, safety and other items pertinent to Medical Ulteeva fiber production via the Distributive Control System (DCS) and other control room monitoring systems.
  • Operates critical process equipment including the chemical glove box, PE loading & transferring system, dosing systems, mixing vessels, extruder booster pump, spinning equipment, quench, P-oven & winders, F-oven with creel & winders, offline twisting equipment, MAP database and DCS.
  • Utilizes good documentation practices required to operate within a regulatory-compliant industry. This includes documenting with double verification as required and the utilization of batch record documentation.
  • Provides full Track & Trace documentation using a paper system, labeling system, and MAP database systems.
  • Measures and dispenses raw materials to create sub-lots. Charges all raw materials into the Medical Purity production process.
  • Set up, operate, monitor, adjust and maintain all process systems in accordance with the Job Safety Analysis procedures, recipes, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Clean all process equipment and facilities required for producing Medical Ulteeva fiber in accordance with applicable work instructions. Cleaning of production area must meet International Clean room Standard ISO-14644 CAT 8 (former class 100.000) at rest state.
  • Responsible for the initial equipment setup, entering of recipes and stabilization of the process prior to starting Medical Purity production runs. Proficient in the start-up/shutdown of all equipment and the automated batch program.
  • Responsible for quality alarm management and quality documentation of alarm conditions including documentation of Non-conformance product during the Medical Purity process. Dispositions product as appropriate for the alarm condition according to the decision matrix within the Operation Manual.
  • Operate various ancillary utility systems including cooling towers, chillers, boilers, air compressors, hot oil units, RO water generation system, water and air treatment systems, and air separation equipment.
  • Take samples and determine properties of the produced intermediate and finished products. Maintain records of operating parameters and raw materials used to produce products. Inspect and pack finished product within the Medical Ulteeva fiber operation.
  • Assist in the training and guidance of other team members. Is proficient in the Medical Fiber Technician and Fiber Technician I and II positions and is a fill-in and trainer for those jobs as time permits.
  • Notifies and directs team resources when outages occur as well as maintenance when utility and HVAC alarms are present.
  • As a team member, takes leadership of the Shift when a Medical Rover, Medical Operations Supervisor or a Fiber Supervisor is not available.
  • Aids in troubleshooting via DCS trending, DCS Historian and other PC-based programs such as MAP Database. Must use the Microsoft Excel program to provide information regarding such. Ability to predict potential problems as a result of using these tools. Participates in RCA as needed.
  • Handles urgent and emergency situations and make immediate adjustments to minimize down time and prevent incidents. Utilizes good judgment in making critical decisions on product quality, equipment functionality, safety and other related activities.
  • Comply with all job-related regulatory and training requirements in a timely manner. Emphasis on ISO 13485 Standard compliance and following the established Medical quality systems.
  • Actively promotes team involvement in area. Uses group diversity and individual strengths to positively contribute to the profitability of the company and maintain harmonious working relationships.
  • Responsible for compliance with relevant laws, regulatory requirements, recipes, SOP's, and other related documentation and activities. Ensures Company guidelines and policies relating to quality, safety, housekeeping and cost-effectiveness are met.
  • Provides daily feedback to supervision and staff related to key process parameter performance.
  • Maintains accurate account and whereabouts of visitors, location(s) of maintenance work, and production/support technicians. Completes required daily documentation including checklists, regulatory documentation, and other as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Authorities

If trained and knowledgeable, is authorized to issue up to Low Risk Work Permits. If designated, trained and knowledgeable, is authorized to issue High Risk Work Permits.

This position involves work with (supervision of) and/or handling hazardous materials and waste at the Avient Protective Materials (Greenville, NC) work site. Worker has the appropriate qualifications to read, understand, apply and communicate written and verbal information regarding handling and managing hazardous wastes. Training is required within six months of worker assuming duty, and once a year thereafter. Worker is responsible for proper handling, documentation, inspection and transporting around the facility of hazardous wastes. Worker may also be responsible for responding to emergencies involving hazardous waste.

Knowledge and Educational Level
High school diploma and at least 1 years experience in a fiber manufacturing environment or 1 year experience in the military, construction, mechanic, or working in a pharmaceutical or medical regulated industry and at least six months experience in a fiber production environment.

Required Level of Experience



  • Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures
  • Knowledge of scheduling procedures.
  • Knowledge of changeovers/cleaning/set-up, work instructions for fiber activities.
  • Knowledge of typical utility system operations associated with fiber manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computation; problem solving.
  • Ability to plan buffers to achieve maximum process throughput.
  • Ability to drive improvements in production lead times and minimize reject material.
  • Firm understanding of computerized control systems via PC and DCS systems, programs, and software.
  • Ability to read and understand equipment and process drawings and related technical information.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Mechanical skills & knowledge including equipment assembly.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records per Quality Control documentation practices.
  • Ability to constantly produce at established production rates.
  • Skills in detecting defects and identifying and correcting the root cause.
  • Ability to read gauges, dials, meters and set controllers.
  • Knowledge of performance standards.



Physical Demands



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk and/or hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle up to 100 or more pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires the use of safety equipment as dictated by the work area such as safety glasses and shoes, dust mask, hard hat, respirator, face shield, hearing protection, chemical suit, gloves, aprons, etc.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with the exception of high noise areas.
  • Proper personal safety equipment needs to be used while performing this job and that equipment is dictated by the plant safety guidelines.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemical dust, and risk of electric shock, vibration, non-hazardous chemical agents and outside weather conditions.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
