THE POSITION

Washington County's Finance Department is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our team!

The Opportunity
The Senior Accountant provides professional-level accounting and finance support under the supervision of the Chief Accountant. Responsibilities include preparing and overseeing financial reports, supporting audits, collaborating with operating departments to develop accounting procedures, and ensuring compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and other regulatory requirements.

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in financial reconciliation, debt management, and property tax reporting, while contributing to the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and supporting external audits.

Ideal Candidate Profile
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in governmental accounting principles, including GASB standards.
  • Solid understanding of general ledger reconciliation, financial analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience with financial ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, Munis, Workday).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formula (i.e. IF, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, COUNTIF, etc.), creating and managing tables, PivotTables/PivotCharts and financial analysis tools.

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and reconciliation.
Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Ability to work effectively under the guidance of the Chief Accountant.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse departments and providing technical guidance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in finance or accounting; AND

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience performing budgetary or financial analysis, or auditing, which includes at least one (1) year of supervisory or lead worker experience spanning responsibilities in the defined principle duties of this position classification.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

  3. Subject Matter Expert Review: Your SME answers may be evaluated and scored by a panel of subject matter experts. Your total score for this examination will affect your placement on the eligible list (a list of candidates eligible for interviews). This process will begin after February 9th, 2025.
  4. Panel Interview(s): Panel interviews will be scheduled for the top candidates who successfully pass the initial screening step. First round interviews will be conducted the week of February 16th, 2025.
  5. Conditional Offer of Appointment: Human Resources will conduct a salary analysis for the successful candidate(s) and extend an offer of appointment.
  6. Post-Offer Check: The successful candidate will undergo a background check.
  7. Start Date: A start date will be determined after all conditions of employment have been met.
