The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is searching for a postdoctoral associate to work on an NIH-funded study. The study investigates language assessment approaches for early school-age children who speak a language other than English at home. The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for project management, training and supervision of research assistants, recruitment, data collection, and data management, with opportunities to collaborate on research publications and presentations. This is a 100% research position with a one-year initial appointment. The appointment has the potential to be extended depended on funding, performance, and the needs of the unit. Teaching is not required but there are many opportunities for teaching within the department.

Job responsibilities

Project Management - 45% of time

  • Train study staff on study protocols
  • Coordinate data collection at local study sites, including scheduling study visits with sites and project staff
  • Administer study protocol as needed
  • Supervise study staff in collecting and managing study data
  • Supervise reliability and fidelity processes
  • Coordinate schedules of lab personnel
  • Maintain records of lab equipment and resources, including participant compensation
  • Miscellaneous administrative duties and assignments as requested

Study Recruitment - 30% of time

  • Identify and develop relationships with schools and school districts; secure and maintain approvals to allow research procedures
  • Communicate with families interested in the study
  • Screen, consent, and enroll appropriate participants following established protocols
  • Oversee study compliance with HIPAA and human subjects research requirements for informed consent and record-keeping

Scientific development - 15%

  • Collaborate on the dissemination of project results, including preparing graphical and written presentations appropriate for internal review and for external scientific forums
  • Assist in the development of future research projects and funding proposals

Data Management - 10% of time

  • Develop and maintain an organized, transparent management system for study data
  • Maintain systems for participant tracking and correspondence
  • Curate data for sharing
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD (or expected graduation by start date) in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, Psychology, Linguistics, Education, or related field, with expertise in child language
  • Experience conducting human-subjects research with children
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to use one's time efficiently with only minimal direction
  • Ability to travel to local recruitment and testing sites
  • Supervisory experienc

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in a language other than English
  • Clinical certification as a speech-language pathologist (CCC-SLP)
  • Experience administering and interpreting language assessments to children
About the Department

The department offers internationally recognized programs in speech-language hearing sciences (BA, Ph.D.), speech-language pathology (M.A.), and audiology (Au.D.) that provide outstanding opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to pursue academic, educational, and clinical careers. The department hosts a Bilingual Multicultural Emphasis Certificate Program for graduate students in speech-language pathology and audiology. Faculty research and teaching are strongly supported at the unit and collegiate levels. Interdisciplinary collaborations abound across the university. Many faculty collaborate with university-wide centers, including the Center for Cognitive Sciences, the Center for Applied and Translational Sensory Sciences, and the Center for Clinical Movement Disorders. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,000.00 - $64,000.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience
