Backend/Platform Software Engineer

PSI Quantum
$120,000-$180,000 USD
United States
Feb 20, 2025

Quantum computing holds the promise of humanity's mastery over the natural world, but only if we can build a real quantum computer. PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the first real, useful quantum computers, capable of delivering the world-changing applications that the technology has long promised. We know that means we will need to build a system with roughly 1 million qubits that supports fault tolerant error correction within a scalable architecture, and a data center footprint.

By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over today's most powerful supercomputers, offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of industries including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more.

PsiQuantum has determined the fastest path to delivering a useful quantum computer, years earlier than the rest of the industry. Our architecture is based on silicon photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components at Tier-1 semiconductor fabs such as GlobalFoundries where we leverage high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that are already producing billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics applications. We also benefit from the quantum mechanics reality that photons don't feel heat or electromagnetic interference, allowing us to take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems and industry standard fiber connectivity.

In 2024, PsiQuantum announced two government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first Quantum Data Centers and utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia and Chicago, Illinois. Both projects are backed by nations that understand quantum computing's potential impact and the need to scale this technology to unlock that potential. And we won't just be building the hardware, but also the fault tolerant quantum applications that will provide industry-transforming results.

Quantum computing is not just an evolution of the decades-old advancement in compute power. It provides the key to mastering our future, not merely discovering it. The potential is enormous, and we have the plan to make it real. Come join us.

There's much more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey!

Job Summary:

PsiQuantum is singularly focused on the delivery of a useful utility-scale fault tolerant quantum computer. In addition to deploying a world-class quantum computer, we aim to deliver a world-class quantum software user experience to both our external customers and internal developers. After many years of development, we have created an incredible developer platform for the design of quantum algorithms. We are now scaling our platform to many users while continuing to expand the power of our toolkit.

As our first in-house Senior Backend Platform Engineer, you'll be instrumental in shaping our algorithm developer platform product. You will take ownership of all our backend components and infrastructure, ensuring we have robust, secure, and scalable backend systems using AWS services.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure that infrastructure, automation, and monitoring are aligned with development and operational goals.
  • Write robust, modular, and maintainable Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, AWS CDK, Pulumi) code to manage AWS infrastructure and operational tasks and integrations.
  • Collaborate with the QA team to develop test plans and support testing to identify bugs and ensure systems function correctly before, during, and after deployment.
  • Oversee GitLab environments, including version control, automated builds, and deployment processes.
  • Develop and support our backend AWS architecture for scalability, reliability, and security, in collaboration with the IT, engineering, and product teams.
  • Implement monitoring and logging tools to ensure system reliability and preemptively identify issues.
  • Implement security best practices in all stages of the development lifecycle, from design to deployment, including ensuring proper authentication and authorization controls. Create and document best practices for ensuring system uptime and quickly resolving system failures.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on platform engineering, operations and DevOps practices.
  • Proficiency in designing and managing infrastructure using EKS, ECS, Lambda, VPC, S3, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience with CI/CD pipelines (Gitlab CI Pipeline/Github Actions), and cloud infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
  • Experience with containerized architecture (Docker, ECS) and microservices (Lambda, API Gateway) is a must.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL database management (RDS, DynamoDB, Redis) is a must.
  • Experience with security-related services (such as Okta, Auth0, IAM, and KMS) is a must.
  • Familiarity with self-hosted or cloud-based Git systems.
  • Experience with multi-environment infrastructure (dev, staging, prod) is a must.
  • Familiarity providing hosted, managed IDEs to developers, data scientists, or researchers.
  • Some experience building for public sector customers with compliance needs is a plus.
  • Having AWS Certified Solutions Architect (SAA or SAP) or similar cloud certifications is a strong plus.
