Landscape Technician

Summary

Responsible for installing and maintaining landscape including perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, and ornamental trees in assigned planting locations within the Garland Parks and Recreation Department. Also responsible for maintaining a variety of plants, brushes and trees within Tree Nurseries and the Greenhouse or mowing of golfing greens, tees, fairways and roughs.

Salary

$14.69 - $18.14

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may

be assigned.

  • Perform planting and maintenance of all color, perennial, groundcover, shrubs, tree trimming and tree planting areas.

  • Participate in litter control by removing debris from grounds.

  • Perform weeding and fertilizing of flower and shrub beds.

  • Trim and sculpt trees by using chain saws, pole saws, brush chippers and stump grinders.

  • Maintain public safety in work areas.

  • Mow and/or maintain landscape medians.

  • Plant and maintain bed areas, container and tree nursery, and greenhouse facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • 2 years landscape maintenance experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • 2-4 years landscape maintenance, horticultural and/or greenhouse experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of pesticide and chemical application use and safety practices and procedures

  • Basic knowledge of landscape maintenance including seasonal color and perennial plants, greenhouse operations and functions

  • Basic knowledge of safety hazards and safety practices

  • May need basic knowledge of golf course terms

  • Skill to use a variety of tools and equipment appropriate to the work assigned Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • Valid Class B Texas Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within six months of hire

  • Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License required or ability to obtain within six months of hire

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. May be exposed to extremes of heat and cold, rain, humidity, wetness, insects, noxious odors, fumes, and physical stress from exertion and lifting. Exposed to physical exertion such as bending, lifting, stooping, reaching, pulling, and pushing. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
