Lutheran Social Services of Illinois is a not-for-profit social service agency with more than 70 program sites throughout the state of Illinois. Our services include counseling, mental health, substance abuse treatment, housing, work with prisoners and their families and services for older adults and a variety of services for children including preschool, foster care, and adoption.
Behavioral Health Services of LSSI is hiring a part-timeMedical Director. The Substance Use Medical Director's leadership is a multidimensional activity that includes the oversight of administrative, operational, educational, and clinical actions related to patient care. Alongside the Substance Use Senior Director, the Medical Director assures that care provided by substance use personnel meets the standards of quality medical and psychiatric care including integration of physical healthcare, Mental Health, and SUD treatment.
The Medical Director must have a collaborative and cooperative approach to working with substance use leadership and staff, as there are many who will work in concert to ensure the programs are functioning optimally. Furthermore, the Medical Director's role is one of guidance, standard setting, monitoring, and assuring the delivery of a good standard of care for persons being treated and served by the system. The SU Medical Director should be a role model in their interactions with others for delivery of care that is recovery oriented, customer centered, culturally competent, inclusive, and welcoming of diversity.
This position will have no direct reports, will report to the Associate Executive Director of Recovery and Reintegration, and will work as a member of the Substance Use Leadership Team which includes the Substance Use Senior Director as well as other key Substance Use Leaders.

Essential Functions:
  • Complete psychiatric evaluations and/or medical assessments to ensure that substance use clients receive appropriate evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, medical screening. Prescribe medication, as indicated.
  • Provide oversight and Supervision to Substance Use Nurse Practitioner, who will also be tasked with completing psychiatric evaluations and/or medical assessments and prescribing medication, as indicated.
  • Participate as a member of the Substance Use Leadership and Treatment Team. Provide counsel on implementation processes, decisions, and help support the clinical quality of substance use services.
  • Participate in the development, approval, and review of substance use Policies, Procedures, and Protocols that govern clinical care, and the integration of substance use and behavioral health services.
  • Participate as a member of the CQI Team to ensure that quality clinical care is being provided. Provide counsel to help support improvements in order to meet clinical benchmarks.
  • Perform clinical case reviews in conjunction with Clinical and Quality departments.
  • Provide consultation with substance use staff on complex client cases.
  • Participation in clinical workgroups, as required.
  • Participate in the development of a clinically relevant, outcome evaluation process.
  • Liaison for the substance use services with community physicians, hospital staff, and other professionals and agencies.
  • Supports cultural awareness and promotes activities related to health equity in an effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities.
  • Ensure adherence to ethical standards of treatment, including NASW Code of Ethics.
  • Familiarity with Emergency Procedures.
  • Demonstrate professional, positive behavior and carry out responsibilities with integrity, treating clients, families, and other LSSI workforce members, and collaborative organizations and/or individual in a dignified, respectful, honest, and fair manner.
Position Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy is required. Board certified in Psychiatry or Addition Medicine is required.
  • Current license to practice as a physician without restrictions in the State of Illinois.
  • 2+ years of experience as a practicing psychiatrist post-residency with both mental health and substance use.
  • 2+ years of experience working with community-based programs and resources to address social determinants of health.
  • Background check clearance is required.
  • Excellent communication, organization, presentation and pc/computer skills (including proficiency with Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) along with other related software.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in EHR documentation and review.
  • Familiarity with accreditation and licensure standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the clinical application of the principles of engagement, empowerment, rehabilitation, and recovery.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing for the state of residency and insurance.
  • Valid Illinois statutory and liability insurance coverage is required.
