About the Role:

  • The Associate Manager, Chemistry is a member of our SCJ Professional business unit, serving the needs of industrial and institutional business partners globally.   • The Associate Manager, Chemistry leads a variety of functions related to formulation, labeling, and consumer acceptability of our products to meet the growing Professional business unit. You will develop new products, line extensions, and lead technology advancements which result in consumer preferred benefits and intellectual property.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute assignments within large projects and lead small projects or initiatives
  • Develop formulations to meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping.
  • Formulate new products, product changes, assist in leading technology advancements, and competitive assessments which result in new consumer benefits, reduced cost or improved environmental impact of the products.
  • Investigate new materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, record findings, and suggest applications
  • Meet with chemical suppliers and SCJ Procurement partners to evaluate novel materials for use in various formulations
  • Collaborate with multifunctional core teams (R&D, Design, Marketing, Marketing Research, and Product Supply) to successfully identify, develop, and launch new products in an accelerated manner.
  • Develop formulas for SCJ Professional, including but not limited to, Cosmetics, OTC Drugs, Floor care, skin care and surface care products.
  • Communicate complex ideas accurately and concisely to colleagues at all levels within the company and to a variety of diverse disciplines and functions to deliver business-building solutions.
  • Work with multiple product types and translate user needs into consumer-preferred solutions
  • Interpret consumer test results and provide recommendations for product improvements and claims.
  • Explore and understand existing intellectual property landscapes for product portfolio with the aim of development of novel, IP-protected technologies
  • Follow general lab safety guidelines and maintain a clean, orderly work area
  • Adhere to and communicate project milestones and launch time deadlines
  • Input data requirements in SAP with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Be present for pilot batches and first production runs as necessary and work closely with cross functional team members on ensuring quality scale up of laboratory formulas to pilot plant and full production
  • Obtain an awareness of regulatory and sustainability issues applicable to product launches
  • Travel to internal SCJ manufacturing or third-party manufacturers and industry events as requested/necessary and determined by needs of the business and direction from supervisor
  • Support sales team with customer questions and performance testing data
  • Work as a member of a fast-paced project team to create new products or product improvements that address consumer user criteria, needs, and insights
  • Utilize knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and statistics to efficiently select appropriate course(s) of action to meet business needs

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related science and a minimum of 6 years of experience in the consumer products industry or master's degree with at least 3 years relevant work experience

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Possess a basic understanding of regulatory processes (i.e., EPA and FDA registrations)
  • Knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various formulation and delivery system technologies related to products (e.g., emulsion chemistry, gel formulation, polymer chemistry, reaction products, surfactants, solvents, builders).
  • Understanding of the functional properties, proper use, and the environmental impact of ingredients
  • Scientific curiosity and the ability to solve technical problems related to formulation and manufacturing.
  • Cross-functional teaming skills to effectively work across internal organizational boundaries.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate accurately and concisely to multiple levels within the company.
  • Highly proactive and results-oriented approach.
  • Proficient computer skills; will be required to become competent in the use of PLM (SAP based product management system) and other key systems that enable product development.

  • Office work environment: Remote work available once a week for eligible employees
  • Up to 10% travel
  • Ability to lift 10 - 40 pounds
  • This position is not eligible for domestic or international relocation.
