The Homeland Protection Systems Group works with U.S. Government agencies to develop, assess, and rapidly transition advanced technologies aimed at safeguarding the National Airspace and addressing emerging National security priorities in the Homeland. The Group has successfully deployed innovative technology solutions to tackle defense challenges for the National airspace, population centers, and critical infrastructure. We specialize in comprehensive systems analysis, advanced technology development, and rapid prototyping. Leveraging our expertise in complex systems, algorithms, and hardware prototyping, our team of scientists, engineers, and technologists applies cutting-edge techniques in data analysis, predictive analytics, and systems engineering to solve complex Homeland Protection problems. Our goal mission is to deliver and deploy advanced technologies that strengthen National Security in the Homeland.


Job Description

The Homeland Protection Systems Group is seeking highly motivated candidates who have a passion for solving challenging problems. As a Staff Scientist in our Group, you will be responsible for developing an understanding of complex systems, implementing models based on first principles, and developing recommendations to inform government leadership on the most challenging problems related to homeland protection. You will have the opportunity to work with an experienced, multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engineers to develop technologies for complex systems. Our recent areas of research include defense systems design recommendations, multi-sensor fusion, vulnerability assessments, machine learning applications, and hardware prototyping. We research a wide variety of problem domains within our mission area, and are therefore looking for staff with an innate curiosity to solve diverse problems. We encourage engagement with the academic and government community at-large through publications and conference attendance. We collaborate with Groups across MIT Lincoln Laboratory to provide our team members with access to unique datasets, state-of-the-art resources, and challenging technical problems that will give you the opportunity to use your skills to make a real-world impact.

Requirements

* Doctorate or equivalent in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or related discipline. In lieu of a PhD, a Master's degree and 3 years' relevant experience will be considered

* Ability to quickly learn new technical areas and apply that knowledge effectively to solve challenging mission problems

* Ability to clearly present technical concepts to a wide spectrum of audiences

* Proficient at high-level prototyping software languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or Julia)

* Desire to lead exploration into new technical areas in support of the Group's mission

* Knowledge to develop, implement, test and evaluate novel algorithms and concepts

* Intellectual curiosity and a passion for solving challenging problems

Desired Skills

* Knowledge of sensors and sensing modalities, physics of sensor operation

* Expertise in processing large datasets and data exploitation techniques

* Mentoring experience

* The ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects at once
