Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) Enterprise Network Services organization provides cutting-edge technology services and solutions that enable the Cornell community to achieve its academic, research, and administrative goals.

The Network Engineering team works closely with other teams within Enterprise Network Services on day-to-day operational issues and cross-team projects. The customer base spans the entire Cornell community on the Ithaca Campus, at remote sites across New York state, and beyond. In addition, the Network Engineering team:

• Routinely collaborates with other engineering groups within CIT, IT professionals across campus, and the research community on a variety of projects and technology initiatives.
• Serves as the escalation point and subject matter experts for all network communications technologies, major network incidents, operational issues, ongoing performance and capacity planning, and overall strategic direction for network communications technologies.
• Researches and implements innovative solutions to support current and future campus initiatives.

As a Senior Network Engineer, you will play a prominent role in the engineering, development, and support of central services & emerging technologies vital to the IT operations and research missions of Cornell University.

Under general supervision, a Senior Network Engineer will primarily be expected to: Have broad and deep technical expertise, hands on experience, and possess a customer-oriented mindset.

• Be responsible for designing, engineering, implementing, and supporting multiple highly complex networking and communications technologies.
• Excel in both team and independent work environments.
• Participate in strategic planning, design, engineering, implementation, and support of a wide portfolio of current technologies, services, and emerging technologies which include, but are not limited to:
  • Wide Area Networking: Colocation facilities, dark fiber circuits, leased wave services, optical systems, ISP sevices and dedicated research networks
  • Routing: OSPF/OSPF3, BGP/mBGP, IPv4/IPv6, IP multicast, high-availability topologies, traffic engineering
  • Switching: Vlan Tagging (802.1q), spanning-tree (802.1), data center switching, virtual chassis, high-availability topologies, VxLAN
  • Firewalls & VPN's: Stateful access control policies, IPSEC point-to-point and remote access SSL VPN's, remote site connectivity
  • Wireless: Enterprise-scale cloud and controller-based Wi-Fi 5 / Wi-Fi 6(e)cellular technologies, DAS systems, private 5G
  • Network Automation: Ansible, Python, Perl, and other scripting languages.

The Network Engineering team shares on-call responsibility for 24x7x365 support.

Position requirements:

• Bachelor's degree and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination
• 5 years of hands-on experience engineering and troubleshooting complex, multi-protocol, network environments
• Experience with implementation strategies to refresh network hardware and incorporate new technologies
• Experience managing colocation facilities, physical and logical circuits, external connectivity, local and regional peering
• Deep understanding of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies & protocols
• Knowledge of stateful firewalls, VPN technologies and security protocols
• Knowledge of wireless specifications such as Wi-Fi (802.11), cellular (4G/5G), mobile data, 900mhz
• Familiarity with network automation and scripting principles
• Self-starter that understands the meaning of facilitated collaboration both within and outside an organization
• Strong coordination and organizational skills essential
• Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
• Ability to visualize processes end-to-end and to understand the interactions between various complicated systems.
• Ability to present information effectively to campus leaders and diverse groups
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred qualifications (but not required) include:

• Experience working in Higher Education / R1 Research Universities
• Experience with Juniper, Aruba, Fortinet (firewalls), Cisco (VPN) hardware, and ADTRAN (DWDM) hardware
