The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (
CCAS) is the intellectual and creative backbone of the university, a place where the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences come together to form a nexus of ideas and opportunity. Political Science explores wide-ranging topics related to political behavior and governance, both in the United States and across the globe. Here on the campus of The George Washington University, the Political Science Department houses nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs with emphases in the subfields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations.
The Academic Department Administrator reports to the Academic Department Supervisor.
General duties include:
General Operations:
- Manage and maintain the department's website, email communications, and social media presence by providing details about the admissions process/deadlines, additional content regarding the faculty in the news, undergraduate and graduate student achievements, newsletters, and year-end donation campaigns. This also includes scheduled routine edits for content for the department's website, including faculty and graduate student biographies (publications, CVs, courses taught, etc.) and events calendar (speaker series, workshops, and dissertations).
- Responsible for reserving meeting spaces, including exam makeups with faculty.
- Create and manage invitations and public announcements (University calendar, Institute's website, etc.)
Undergraduate Program Support
- Provide enhanced administrative support during the graduate admission and full-time faculty hiring seasons. This includes, but is not limited to, aiding in document gathering and sorting as advised.
- Collect and organize data for the undergraduate weekly brief newsletters.
- Assist the department chair and academic department supervisor in compiling the annual department newsletter with Alumni Affairs.
Financial Support
- Prepare and process all honoraria and external reimbursements for an active guest speaker calendar for the Loeb Institute's account.
- Organize and plan guest speaker, hotel reservations, airfare and other travel arrangements charged to the Loeb Institute's account.
- Order general supplies, catering, and reserve spaces for the Loeb Institute's events.
This position performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. |
Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, including coordinating events, processing transactions, maintaining department records, and drafting correspondence while ensuring clear communication with students, faculty, staff, and the public is desired.
- Proven ability to assist with the management of Federal Work Study student employees, support faculty and staff during admissions and hiring seasons, and maintain department website content and social media presence is preferred.
- Skilled in handling financial transactions, organizing data, scheduling department events, and resolving inquiries in an efficient and effective manner, ensuring smooth department operations is desired.
