GIS Technician Intern

Position Overview:
Fishbeck is seeking a motivated GIS Intern to join our Geospatial Services team in our Grand Rapids, Michigan office. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and contribute to meaningful projects. As a GIS Intern, you will work alongside experienced professionals, developing your technical skills while supporting the collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in managing, editing, and organizing geospatial data using tools like ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Support the creation of high-quality maps and cartographic products for presentations, reports, and publications.
- Conduct spatial data analysis to support project-specific needs.
- Participate in field data collection using GPS or other geospatial technologies, ensuring data accuracy.
- Provide technical support for GIS-related requests, including troubleshooting and data queries.
- Contribute to the development of web-based GIS applications and dashboards.
- Stay updated on the latest trends and tools in GIS, leveraging them to enhance workflows.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Proficiency in GIS software, particularly ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with data visualization and cartographic design principles.
- Familiarity with GPS tools, data collection methods, or Python for GIS (preferred but not required).
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative attitude.
- Willingness to learn and apply GIS tools and techniques.
- Meticulous attention to detail in data entry and map creation.
- Ability to travel for fieldwork, likely not to exceed 10-20% a month.

Minimum Physical Requirements
Must walk, climb, and maneuver outdoors to conduct field work; lift and carry GIS equipment; and operate company motor vehicle to travel to work sites. Outdoor work in inclement weather is necessary. Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in person, in writing, and over the phone. Indoor work involves using a computer and other standard office equipment, sitting, standing, and light lifting. Visual acuity is necessary to perform responsibilities.
Desired Education/Licensure
Enrolled or recently completed a bachelor's degree program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related field.
