HCS VP Risk Management
is a key leader with respect to two critical functions for the UNC Health Care System. First, the role leads, manages, and directs all aspects of the risk management function for UNC Health, including management, risk finance (insurance), claims, and related litigation activities. These activities encompass UNC Health-owned and controlled entities, including UNC Hospitals, UNC Faculty Physicians (the clinical patient care programs of the UNC School of Medicine), UNC Physicians Network, Rex Healthcare, Inc., Rex Hospital, Inc., Rockingham, Caldwell, Chatham, UNCPN Group Practices, UNC Physicians GP II, and other network affiliates. The role helps set the strategic direction for the System risk management function; provides leadership, management, and support for the Liability Insurance Trust Fund (LITF), Carolina Collaborative Insurance Group (CCIG); and places and administers UNC Health's commercial insurance coverage.
Second, the Vice President is also a key leader in collaboration with the Chief Legal Officer, VP for Internal Audit, Chief Compliance Officer, and other UNC Health leaders concerning the implementation and operation of the System's Enterprise Risk Management function, which operates under the direction of the CEO with oversight by the Board of Directors.
In all activities, the VPRM collaborates closely with executive leadership in legal, finance, compliance, audit, hospital operations, physician operations, quality, medical staff, nursing, and other disciplines to support institutional integrity, the organization's mission, values, and business objectives.
Responsibilities:
Serves as a key leader of the Legal, Risk Management, and Audit Services Department.
Leads and manages all aspects of risk management program consisting of clinical risk management, claims, risk finance (insurance), and related litigation activities for UNC Health Care System entities including, but not limited to, UNC Hospitals, UNC Faculty Physicians (the clinical patient care programs of the UNC School of Medicine), UNC Physicians Network, Rex Healthcare, Inc., Rex Hospital, Inc., Rockingham, Caldwell, Chatham, UNCPN Group Practices, UNC Physicians GP II, and other network affiliates.
Communicates, provides leadership, educates, and renders advice and counsel to system and hospital leaders on risk and claim related issues, working collaboratively to consider all factors and develop innovative ways to balance risk management with the advancing of UNC Health's objectives.
Responsible for all risk management leadership for UNC Healthcare. Responsible for planning, organizing and leading all survey and regulatory compliance with Joint Commission, NC Department of Health, and Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) standards. Responsible for leading improvement processes and programs related to risk management, ensuring sustained compliance with submitted plans of correction.
Develops and coordinates risk management structure and implements clinical risk and risk finance management strategies with the goal of protecting existing businesses from adverse risk. Secures and builds the appropriate risk finance structure to support UNC Health's complex risk portfolio. Provides expert risk management program leadership and guidance to UNC Health and provides leadership and consultation to plan, address, and resolve emerging and ongoing risks.
Provides leadership, management, and direction to UNC Health's risk financing programs, including the Liability Insurance Trust Fund (LITF), Carolina Collaborative Insurance Group (CCIG), and UNC Health's commercial insurance programs encompassing coverages including, but not limited to, hospital professional liability, professional liability, general liability, auto, executive (directors & officers) liability, employment practices, workers' compensation, privacy and cyber liability, aviation, inland marine, property; recommends funding strategies, funding levels, and insurance stop-loss.

Negotiates innovative and new risk financing models with various markets to protect UNC Health, including annually negotiating insurance renewals and the complex placement of both lower- and higher-risk assets with multiple domestic and international insurers and reinsurers (a process that is enhanced through actively maintaining relationships with an international network of underwriters and brokers).
Evaluates UNC Health operations and exposures to determine appropriate types and levels of insurance; evaluates loss history and loss exposure to determine self-insurance limits for specific areas of risk. Provides guidance and direction in the oversight and selection of actuaries, third-party administrators, auditors, legal counsel, insurance brokers and other service providers.
Prepares annual risk management report. At the request of the CLO, delivers reports and presentations to the UNC Health Board of Directors and entity boards and executive leadership.
Works with the Chief Legal Officer, VP for Internal Audit, Chief Compliance Officer, and other UNC Health system and entity leaders to implement and operate the System's Enterprise Risk Management function, subject to the direction of the CEO (or designee) and the oversight of the Board of Directors.
As part of the System ERM function, recommends, manages, and supports activities to identify potential risks and assesses their impact on quality, patient care, operations, financial capacity, workforce, legal/regulatory position, organizational integrity, and reputation. Collaborates with system and entity leaders to develop strategies to describe, manage and mitigate potential risks.
Implements risk management policy and directives, including the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Participates in leading UNC Health's risk-aware culture and ensures the consideration of risk into strategic decision-making as a center of excellence for managing risk, drawing on the expertise of highly skilled individuals throughout UNC Health.
Influences change within the UNC Health system, working with all levels on risk management and safety program design, analysis, and improvement. Serves on UNC Health taskforces and committees to foster an integrated, enterprise approach to systemic risk awareness, mitigation, and management.
