The mission of the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics is to promote biomedical discoveries and translational medicine through excellence in research, education, and community service. The Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at UCI School of Medicine is at the forefront of the new and exciting discoveries being made in modern microbiology and molecular genetics. We are a vibrant community of scientific investigators actively engaged in innovative research, discovery, training and teaching in microbiology and molecular genetics. We provide faculty research, training programs for undergraduate and graduate students and outreach functions as part of the mission of UC Irvine's School of Medicine.

The James' laboratory uses genetics as the basis for synthetic approaches to prevent transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. Contributions include the development of mosquito transgenesis procedures, engineered genes that interfere with malaria parasite development in mosquitoes, a population-suppression strain based on flightless female mosquitoes and gene-drive systems to spread beneficial genes quickly through mosquito populations.


Your Role on the Team

The laboratory is involved with working on novel methods for controlling the transmission of vector-borne diseases, specifically malaria and dengue fever. The incumbent will provide assistance to the principal laboratory and insectary personnel, including directed laboratory work, maintenance of mosquito colonies used in experiments, care of vertebrate animals used to feed insects, care and maintenance of the facilities, as well as keeping records of experiments.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Knowledge of mosquitoes and insectary practices
  • Willing to work (anesthetize and monitor) with vertebrate animals used to feed mosquitoes.
  • Willing to perform routine laboratory work.

Preferred:

  • 1-3 years Experience in a laboratory setting
