Purpose

To participate in the coordination, planning, and delivery of academic advising services for students in the UTeach-Liberal Arts Program. Collaborate with the UTeach-Liberal Arts team to carry out the mission of supporting and elevating teacher certification and student engagement across the campus community.

Responsibilities
  • ROUTINE ACADEMIC ADVISING: Serve as primary advisor for UTeach-Liberal Arts students. Answer questions regarding degree plans, major requirements, study abroad, degree enhancement, research experiences, course selection, and registration. Interpret and counsel students on University, College, and departmental rules and regulations. Assist students with registration. Create and update degree profiles. Keep clear, accurate notes on student interactions. Coordinate recruitment efforts across campus. Assist students with learning about scholarships, providing information, gathering data, and tracking updates. Coordinate with faculty to assist with UTeach student organization supervision.
  • DEVELOPMENTAL ACADEMIC ADVISING: Assist students in identifying and pursuing educational, life, and career goals. Work with students experiencing academic difficulty. Promote research, honors, and other academic opportunities. Enhance participation in appropriate co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Encourage behaviors that develop independence, problem-solving skills, personal well-being, and growth. Discuss teacher certification, exams, certification completion, and job opportunities.
  • STRATEGIC ACADEMIC ADVISING: Collect academic advising data, assist administrative team with database maintenance, produce statistics, and enrollment reports. Coordinate with departments and serve as advisor liaison across campus representing UTeach-Liberal Arts. Process and screen all undergraduate and postbacc applications. Coordinate PDS admissions. Maintain course inventory, room/course scheduling, catalogue changes and updates.
  • ADVISING TEAM DEVELOPMENT: Maintain and strengthen the undergraduate academic programs by participating in office meetings and decision-making, providing performance metrics, and assistance with administrative tasks as needed. Assist with projects and special programs such as New Student Orientation Meetings, information sessions for internal transfers, certificate management, and enrollment management. Serve on UTeach advisory board and committees as necessary.
  • SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE: Participate in events including commencement, Gone to Texas, and Orientation. Serve as staff facilitator for a Freshman Interest Group or Transfer Interest Group.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Attend meetings/training sessions and talks related to UT, advising, and departments/majors: College Advisors Meetings, Academic Counselors Association (ACA) meetings, and College professional development activities.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and six years of experience working with college student populations or master's degree in a related field and four years of experience. Proficient oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with all levels of constituents: students, parents, faculty and other staff members. Demonstrated professional demeanor.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience beyond the required or extensive experience in academic advising, group work, assessment, and administration of college students' academic programs. Experience with K-12 public education and secondary teacher certification. UT experience as an orientation advisor, special program mentor, or other related position. Experience with NRRECS, Qualtrics, seat management system, Advisors' Toolkit, personal computer experience in PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Salary Range

$52,000+ depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
