Kao Professorship in Japanese Religions

The Department of Religion and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University in the City of New York invite applications for the Kao Professorship in Japanese Religions. The position may be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor. Candidates of all ranks are invited to apply. The departments welcome applicants whose research and teaching interests contribute to the understanding of Japanese culture through the study of Buddhism as well as other aspects of Japan's religious history.

A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Candidates are expected to have a strong grasp of kanbun and classical Japanese as well as the ability to train students in the reading and interpretation of pre-modern Buddhist texts and historical documents. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated interest in the academic study of religion and cultural history, an innovative research program, and the ability to contribute broadly to the undergraduate, graduate, and public-facing programs of both departments.
