Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Materials Engineer to join our world-class Cathode Engineering team. Our Cathode Engineering Team brings together experts in Materials, Battery, Test, and Process engineering to understand, design, and validate Form Energy's iron positive electrodes.

In this position, you will collaborate with the Electrode Prototyping team to deepen the understanding of the impact of process on material properties and performance.. Your experience with scaling relevant processes (such as dry or wet mixing, calendaring, or lamination) will allow you to drive our cathode to full-scale product readiness. Be ready to characterize, test, and create specifications for our product to inform large scale decisions, all in collaboration with Supply Chain, R&D, Manufacturing, and other engineering teams. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with a breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

What you'll do:
  • Develop improved Cathode mixing processes in collaboration with process and manufacturing teams at Form Factory 1.

  • Set product & process specifications by interpreting complex datasets and driving data-driven decisions based on the conclusions

  • Characterize electrode materials pre and post-test in collaboration with our internal material experts and external vendors, developing characterization techniques where needed.

  • Design, execute, and interpret cathode electrochemical tests in large- and lab-scale test vehicles and Form Energy field-deployed batteries

  • Prioritize safety as you create materials specifications for components of Form Energy's electrodes backed by property <> product performance linkages and understanding of electrochemical mechanisms

  • Develop characterization methods for specifications that can be transferred into quality control metrics in manufacturing.

  • Mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise and practical experience with the potential to formally manage as an individual contributor

What you'll bring:
  • 7+ years of experience in electrochemically-focused materials engineering

  • Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

  • Deep understanding of developing processes of wet and dry mixing, calendaring, roll to roll processing, or extrusion.

  • Demonstrated experience in building property <> performance relationships for batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, or other electrochemical material systems, particularly in deployed and/or market-ready products.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills: ability to communicate at all levels of the organization from executive-level to working teams

  • Demonstrated skills in supplier operational and relationship management

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approx. 20% of the time
