The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Pay Range: $175,900.00 - $272,600.00

Job Description

Job Summary:

Western Governors University is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Operations Engineer to join our team onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a Staff MLOps Engineer, you'll assist data scientists in migrating models to production, ensuring smooth transitions while minimizing disruptions for the broader team. This role requires a strong problem-solver with Databricks expertise who thrives on collaboration and delivering user-focused solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop scalable backend, web, and CI/CD services.

  • Implement proactive monitoring, performance optimization, and root cause elimination.

  • Establish and enforce coding and testing standards for the engineering team.

  • Integrate third-party tools and emerging technologies with existing infrastructure.

  • Architect scalable solutions and continuously enhance the ML Ops platform.

  • Collaborate with product teams to define and deliver on project requirements.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and ensure projects meet deadlines.

Key Skills:

  • Expertise in Databricks and MLOps frameworks (e.g., SageMaker, Seldon).

  • Expertise in scalable, fault-tolerant infrastructure using DevOps practices.

  • Advanced troubleshooting, performance tuning, and software development best practices.

  • Programming experience with Python, Scala/Java, or Go.

  • Experience with cloud-based ecosystems (AWS preferred), big data, and stream processing (e.g., Apache Spark, ksqlDB).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field

  • Minimum 9 years' experience web-based applications and web services using Java, SOAP, REST, XML, and other web technologies, including experience interfacing with Oracle databases, and integrating third party products with existing infrastructure

  • Advanced degrees may reduce experience requirements by 2-4 years

Position & Application Details
