Closures Engineering Design Manager - BIW (Body-In-White)

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is currently looking for a Closures Engineering Design Manager - BIW at our Superior Township, Michigan facility.

The Manager for Closures Engineering Design - BIW is responsible for supporting and executing a strong vision, strategy, and business plan for a growing and diverse team. The BIW Manager would be responsible for 7 direct reports with an expansion plan by the end of 2025.

The successful candidate will have a wide breadth of Automotive experience with the ability to lead the design and development of numerous vehicles that meet or exceed our local customer requirements from concept through lifecycle production while simultaneously developing new technologies and adhering to the highest safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

• Strategic Leadership: Create, communicate, and execute the Closures Engineering Design BIW Team - vision laid out by Sr. Manager in support of VE, HATCI and Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) visions, goals, and business objectives.
• Business Management: Successfully meet all KPI's including: Program Timing, Cost & Quality Improvement, Intellectual Property, Budget, Personnel Development, Corporate Culture, etc. Develop goals and objectives for all direct reports. Lead tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan, ensuring all goals and budget spending are met for Closures Engineering Design Mechanisms & BIW R&D budget.
• Team Management: Support annual teamwork plan and budget in support of the HATCI Vehicle Engineering (VE) vision. Lead tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan. Support all goals and budget spending are met for a multi-million dollar R&D budget. Manage and direct Engineers in daily activities for work projects relating to team activities in support of our three brands: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. Ensure administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecard, vacation requests, travel requests, etc., are followed on a timely basis
• Vehicle Development: Be a subject matter expert in relation to Automotive Closure BIW Design, Manufacturing and Proto/Production Processes as well as Testing procedures for Closure BIW System designs especially for our focused efforts with Electrified Vehicles and Light Duty Trucks. Ensure Vehicle Development process is followed from concept to post production, satisfying all customer requirements along the way. Lead competitive benchmarking, detailed engineering cost/weight analysis, performing drawing release, executing engineering orders, meeting safety/regulatory targets, etc. Closures BIW Manager also leads team through releasing responsibilities of all 2D & 3D drawings released by the Closures Engineering Team by Checker Approval status in Hyundai EO (Engineering Order) system.
• Life Cycle Support: Support Manufacturing Plant and production life cycle activities of 5 plants (located in Georgia, Alabama, Mexico, and Brazil) including: product launch metrics, continuous vehicle improvement, cost and mass reductions
• Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Advocate for internal and external customers. Support collaboration with regional affiliates: Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, as well as corporate headquarters in Korea. Actively engaging with all levels, from Engineers, to Managers, to Presidents and C-Suite, building effective relationships with all. Interface and co-work with other teams within VE, HATCI and its affiliates - Project Management, Product Planning, Materials Development, Safety Integration, Regulation & Certification, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing - provide support as required with testing, development, vehicle clinics, etc.
• Technology Assessment and Development: Support new technology assessment and development: Support development of technical road maps and strategies with the goal of implementation to the production vehicle; Liaise with multiple testing and development labs; Provide support to new technology research and adoption projects,
• Communication, Communication, Communication: Interface and co-work with other teams within HATCI and its affiliates: Product Planning, Propulsion, Vehicle Test and Development, Electronics, Regulation & Certification, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, etc. Support creation of presentations to President, reoccurring group updates summarizing the key activities and future plans. Review progress to work plan and quality of work. Provide technical direction and guidance. Accurately maintain and update project status reports and review with upper management routinely.
• Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Support development of R&D budget, ensuring optimal utilization of resources. Monitor and be fist line approver for expenses, identify savings opportunities, and support project/strategic investment decisions to support all R&D activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally.

Required Skills

• Expert oral and written communication skills
• Expert in CATIA, ENOVIA V6, 3d Experience, CAE or similar systems
• Expert Project Management skills
• Flexible in program and process changes. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs - you will need to react fast and pivot hard sometimes.
• Expert skills in MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Proficient time management and organization skills
• Proficient self-management skills

Education and Experience

• Bachelor in Engineering (minimum) with MBA or Master's Degree preferred
• 12-15 years in automotive vehicle design and development with increasing levels of project and team management
• 3+ years managing an Engineering Department or Section preferred.
• Expert in Vehicle Design and Solving Development and Quality Issues (Warranty, IQS, Plant Issues, Field Issues)
• Significant experience and expertise in automotive areas eg: Closures Moving, Closures Mechanisms, CAE, Testing, Quality, production launch.
• Experience working and accepting culturally diverse team environment and willingness to learn new ways of interacting & program processing.
• Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record
