Director, Legal Counsel

Director, Legal Counsel provides leadership, coordination, and legal support acting as a strategic Legal partner to the US business and the Global Franchises. As a legal counsel, this attorney is expected to interact with senior Alcon managers on a regular basis to facilitate Alcon's Legal efforts and drive functional excellence and ensure internal business and alignment related to Alcon's Surgical and Vision Care franchises.

Major Accountabilities

Director, Legal Counsel will:

  • Have primary responsibility for negotiating, drafting and revising complex commercial agreements.
  • Build relationships with and counsel senior business partners and senior management on complex matters including commercial proposals, new product launches, and the integration of acquisitions.
  • Provides strategic guidance and effective support to help reduce risk and avoid unanticipated disruptions to the business.
  • Oversees and manages external counsel as required from time to time, ensuring that (i) Alcon receives timely, efficient, and effective legal advice and representation; and (ii) the legal fees and expenses are reasonable for the services provided and within agreed budget.
  • Represent Legal on respective teams within Alcon to provide critical legal perspectives.
  • Anticipates and maintains up-to-date knowledge of current laws and industry regulations relevant to the business to provide strategic advice and ensure operations in compliance with all applicable laws and with high ethics and integrity.
  • Training and advising management on new legal trends and legislation in relevant areas.
  • Assess, manage and monitor legal risks to the organization and articulate identified risks to management.
  • Supports the Legal leadership team in achieving the vision and mission of the Legal Function.
  • Act as subject matter expert, applying deep legal expertise and practices with superior working knowledge.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree
  • 10+ years of directly related experience, preferably in the medical device or other healthcare industry
  • Strong negotiation and drafting skills
  • Proven experience in advising on Legal and business risks as they arise within a regulated healthcare business.
  • Experience in leading the legal support of one or more key businesses.
  • Experience in the medical device or other life sciences industry is highly preferred
  • Meaningful experience with US fraud and abuse laws and antitrust laws; experienced in market access and reimbursement issues in the life science industry; experienced negotiating sophisticated commercial agreements
  • Proven history of business partnership, cross-functional collaboration, and leadership to drive strategic results in dynamic commercial environments
  • Must have good business acumen and be solution and customer oriented.
  • The ability to read, write, understand, and communicate fluently in English.
  • Ability to collaborate across the organization to appropriately identify, communicate, and mitigate legal and compliance risks.
