The UC Irvine Police Department provides public safety and law enforcement services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the UCI Irvine campus and properties, and the UCI Health Network, which includes UCI Health Orange, UCI Health Irvine, UCI Health Fountain Valley, UCI Health Lakewood, UCI Health Los Alamitos, UCI Health Placentia-Linda, and designated Health clinics.

The Police Department's Health Division uses a hybrid model that includes Police Officers, Public Safety Ambassadors, Public Safety Responders, Public Safety Supervisors, Security Supervisors, and other professional staff members who work together to safeguard the lives and property of the University and its patients, visitors, faculty, staff and students at the various UCI sites.

Public Safety Supervisors supervise a shift or team of Public Safety members who are tasked with providing both patient-facing and non-patient-facing roles and responsibilities. These include providing information, directions, and general assistance; patrolling and responding to calls for service at various UCI properties; responding to emergencies like disturbances or medical crises; monitoring suspicious activity; providing escorts and assisting with the de-escalation of violent situations; supervising public safety staff and providing direction in the emergency department and various clinical settings, ensuring the public safety team is providing a safety presence and response to the safety and security needs of patients, visitors, faculty, and staff.

Public Safety Supervisors may make arrests, supervise staff members making arrests as needed, assist and supervise placing persons in restraints, write and approve reports, and monitor patients as needed. May supervise staff engaged in the monitoring of security systems, including cameras, monitors, and alarms.

Provides initial and ongoing training to public safety team members, completes performance reviews, investigates complaints, provides counseling, recognizes team members' performance through observation and commendation as well as semi-annual and annual performance evaluations, may recommend discipline, manages the scheduling of staff, oversees payroll, and management of equipment, vehicles, and uniform supplies.

Public Safety Supervisors are expected to conduct themselves professionally and ethically while enforcing policies and procedures. They are expected to exhibit a standard of excellence based on the department's core values of commitment to community, accountability, respect, and employee wellness (CARE).

While the Public Safety Supervisor's primary duties are supervising their team, they may also be called upon to work assigned posts, conduct foot, bike and vehicle patrols, perform visitor control, intervene in combative situations, staff the Public Safety Operations Center (PSOC) and provide real-time intelligence through alarms, radios, cameras, and direct observation to the Health Division. Public Safety Supervisors may also perform other duties as assigned.

Public Safety Supervisors may also be tasked with providing training to staff in Taser certification, First Aid & CPR training, Golf Cart operations training, De-escalation, and Defensive Tactics.


Your Role on the Team

As a member of the UC Irvine Police Department, the Public Safety Supervisor provides supervision and direction to a team of Public Safety Ambassadors and Public Safety Responders in monitoring and responding to public safety concerns and conditions. The Public Safety Supervisor has supervisory responsibility over the team of public safety staff on an assigned shift and performs the more difficult security duties at the advanced operational level.

Required:

  • Must be able to work variable shifts including: days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must be able to display excellent customer service.
  • Must be able to monitor and effectively use public safety alarms, radios, and video surveillance systems.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and provide direction.
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Valid California BSIS Security Guard License
  • 3-5 years Experience in law enforcement or security related operations and interactions with the public.

Preferred:

  • Hospital Security Experience
  • Experience working in a University environment
  • Knowledge of organization, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant regulatory agencies federal and state requirements.
  • Completion of PC 832 Training

Special Conditions:

  • Must be able to complete a modified police officer background, Livescan, and physical exam.
