About the Position Are you someone who believes in serving Maricopa County's indigent population and ensuring they receive the legal representation they deserve? Are you passionate about helping others while being able to put your legal administrative experience to use? If so, apply to join the Office of Public Defense Services (OPDS) as a Legal Management Assistant. In this role, you will assume responsibility for the Request of Funds process for indigent clients, which will allow you to work closely with not only the attorneys in our office, but also with our contract attorneys, and with proper clients as they submit their requests for funding. In addition, you will be relied upon to complete legal research, draft analysis, assist with oversight tasks, and act as a resource for non-legal staff when it comes to legal issues. About the Office of Public Defense Services The Maricopa County Office of Public Defense Services assigns, oversees, and funds private attorneys contracted to represent indigent individuals in criminal, delinquency, dependency, mental health, and probate matters. We provide administrative support, financial oversight, integrated technology solutions, and HR support to all five of Maricopa County's Indigent Representation offices (Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate, and Contract Counsel) in an effort to ensure indigent individuals have their fundamental rights protected and receive quality legal representation. We Require
Four years of administrative experience in a legal setting and/or legal secretary experience Associate's degree in business administration, public administration, or related field A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
A bachelor's degree in legal studies or a related field or a certificate of completion from a Legal Studies or Paralegal Studies program Five or more years of experience handling legal preparations or legal procedures Five or more years of experience performing legal research Experience working in an Indigent Defense environment
Job Contributions
Serve as Request of Funds (ROF) approval coordinator; monitor and research requests, communicate with vendors regarding requests, collaborate with the OPDS Attorney, the OPDS Deputy Director, and the Contract Administrator on complex requests and resolve issues related to ROF requests Collaborate with staff to ensure all ROF requests and approvals are recorded and saved according to office procedures Assist with oversight tasks, including review of contractor and service provider performance and invoicing Research legal issues, provide analysis, and compile information for special projects Assist in developing internal guidelines and procedures Monitor legislation and pending cases and provide updates and summaries to the Director and other members of the management team Compose/prepare, proof, and edit a variety of legal and administrative correspondence Serve as point of contact for staff with regard to legal questions and correspondence Work with the OPDS leadership team and external partners to facilitate indigent representation throughout the County
Working Conditions
Work includes interruptions, time pressures, high volumes of work, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled or changing tasks. Constant need for accuracy, decision making, concentration/vigilance, and teamwork Requires frequent public contact and sitting for long periods of time May be required to lift, carry or push up to 30 pounds floor to waist, waist to shoulder, or shoulder to overhead
