This job supports the Clinical/Peer Review database management, performs data abstraction from medical records for purposes of quality improvement; collects, analyzes and reports data for databases, uses excellent analytical skills to interpret clinically significant information, plays a key role in accreditation and regulatory survey processes within the organization and supports improvement committees and workgroups in data abstraction needs as assigned.

Education

Required -Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Healthcare or related field

Preferred -Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare, or related field

Work Experience

Required -5 yearsexperience working as a professional in a healthcare environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process
  • Work independently and set abstraction priorities based on regulatory guidelines.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accrediting standards
  • General knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of quality management and continuous quality improvement

Job Duties

  • Performs medical record data abstraction, including data required by regulatory agencies, in a timely and effective manner.
  • Assists in resolving patient safety occurrences, identifies and analyzes trends from adverse events reported and helps to spread lessons learned from adverse events, as well as successful initiatives, to other units and departments.
  • Develops data reports to communicate abstraction results and maintains data integrity.
  • Oversees risk management cases through participating in the identification, trending and follow up on clinical issues and facilitates medical chart reviews on all mortality cases for medical peer review.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
