Role Description

The Mechanical Engineering team at Form is focused on designing the battery cell, module, and system enclosure that forms the foundation of our innovative utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We strive to deliver designs that are optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost for high-volume manufacturing at Form Factory.

We're hiring an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer with expertise in structural FEA to support the structural design, and execution of our battery cells, modules and system enclosure. This role is part of a broader mechanical architecture and analysis team that is tasked with ensuring designs are performant, and optimally meet requirements with minimal complexity, material usage and cost. The structural design analyst will play a vital role in ensuring the success of our product across the spectrum of manufacturability, assembly, transportation, site deployment, and environmental exposure. If this sounds like the right role for you, apply now!

What you'll do:
  • Perform static and dynamic structural analysis in support of the design and optimization of Form Energy's iron-air battery cells, module and enclosure

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary teams of structural & CFD analysts, design, manufacturing, transportation & logistics, and site design to develop optimized design solutions for performance, cost, and reliability

  • Contribute to the design and testing of internal engineering prototypes

What you'll bring:
  • Degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Civil Engineering, or related field; with 7+ years of industry experience

  • Experience performing static and dynamic structural FEA on large complex assemblies with varied constraints and joining methods (metal and plastic weldments, rivets, fasteners, adhesive bonds)

  • Experience in defining and modeling various environmental loads (wind, seismic, snow)

  • Experience in structural equations / hand calculations, simplified stick / lumped modeling, and 3D simulation

  • Experience in fatigue, resonance, embrittlement, creep, and other failure mechanisms

  • Experience in model validation / correlation through instrumented empirical test methods

  • Knowledge of relevant engineering materials (metals and plastics) and fabrication techniques

  • Experience designing large outdoor metal enclosures or structures is a plus

  • Experience defining products, engineering requirements, and implementing FMEA principles is a plus

  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as: UL50, UL9540, ASCE 7 is a plus
