The Director of Nursing (DON) is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing the overall nursing care delivery within the senior living facility. The DON ensures the highest standard of care for residents, adheres to all regulatory requirements, and maintains a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment for both residents and staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor nursing staff to ensure effective, quality care for all residents.
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures that align with best practices in senior healthcare.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans, ensuring individualized, person-centered care for each resident.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the nursing department, including staffing, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  • Actively promote teamwork, collaboration, and continuous professional development among the nursing staff.
  • Ensure that all nursing care services meet state and federal regulatory requirements and facility standards.
  • Oversee the documentation of resident health records to ensure accuracy, compliance, and proper record-keeping.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments of the facility's nursing processes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Lead initiatives for quality improvement and resident satisfaction.
  • Oversee the delivery of medical care, administering treatments, medications, and managing complex health conditions.
  • Work closely with physicians, family members, and interdisciplinary teams to develop and modify care plans based on resident needs.
  • Ensure that resident health concerns are addressed promptly and effectively, including emergency responses and crisis management.
  • Promote resident autonomy, dignity, and respect while providing comprehensive nursing care.
  • Manage the nursing department budget, ensuring optimal use of resources while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
  • Oversee inventory of medical supplies and equipment, ensuring timely replenishment and compliance with facility needs.
  • Ensure staffing levels are adequate to meet the needs of residents, balancing quality care with budget constraints.
  • Develop and implement ongoing training programs for nursing staff on current clinical practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure staff members receive the necessary certifications, licensures, and continuing education to perform their roles effectively.
  • Foster a positive work environment that encourages professional growth and retention.
  • Act as a liaison between nursing staff, residents, families, and other healthcare providers to ensure effective communication and comprehensive care.
  • Attend and participate in facility management meetings, ensuring that nursing perspectives are included in all decision-making processes.
  • Report to upper management on the status of nursing services, staff performance, and any concerns affecting resident care.
