Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 5 months.

UCSF Human Resources seeks a HR Generalist to provide academic personnel assistance within a shared services model of the integrated AP/HR organization at UCSF. This is a temporary position with an approximate end date of 5 months from the date of hire.

The position will work with client departments to facilitate their Human Resources business needs, be responsive, identify problems, assist with resolution of routine issues, and analyzes moderately complex issues to recommend solutions. The individual will also coordinate with schools, business units, and specialty centers to deliver efficient and effective personnel services, while ensuring compliance with UCSF policy and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing various HR requests, including but not limited to leave requests, new employee onboarding requests, and HBS.
  • Analyzing and processing HR requests as appropriate.
  • Coordinating visa/immigration matters with UC International Scholars Office and candidates.
  • Assisting Staff and Academic Generalists with HR tasks.
  • Supporting other related duties as assigned.
  • Serving populations including Academics, Postdoctoral Scholars, or Graduate Student Researchers.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organizational and college policies and procedures governing academic HR.
  • Familiarity with formal and informal policies and procedures at the organization, college, and departmental levels, including understanding variances to stated policies.
  • Knowledge of human resources management systems and related business software programs and systems.
  • Understanding of the unit's academic culture and the educational goals of the discipline(s) served.
  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations for Chairs/unit management.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
