This position is part of Novanta's Synrad business unit. Synrad has come to be recognized as a leader in the development of sealed CO2 lasers and electro-optics technologies. Based on our patented "All Metal" tube technology, there are now well over 250,000 Synrad lasers in use throughout the world. Synrad lasers are used in a wide variety of industrial applications, including marking, coding, engraving, cutting, and converting on a wide range of target materials.

We are seeking a motivated Electronics Engineer to work in a design environment that handles new product introduction, sustaining, and design, creating control and sensor PCBs, and working with digital and RF engineers to develop laser driver modules. Additionally, the Engineer will work with a multidisciplinary engineering and continuous improvement team, building the tests, tools, processes, and culture required to improve product quality, and productivity. He/she will troubleshoot and support existing designs, develop product improvements, and assist in the movement of new products into production by defining, designing and implementing methods, processes and product changes to address internal and external quality defects while enabling the ultimate success of our operators and technicians.

Specific Responsibilities: As a key member of the Synrad R&D Electrical Engineering team, the scope of responsibilities include:

  • Perform hardware development on electronic control circuits and firmware, RF/VHF power modules, and power electronics modules
  • Provide circuit analysis, design enhancement, component selection, test plans, and documentation (such as circuit simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout, and BOM creation)
  • Generate lab setups, test and measurements, and data analysis for electronics components and integrated systems
  • Participate in the development, improvement, troubleshooting and documentation of electronic circuits driving Synrad laser products
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of engineering teams and various levels of operations to help nurture a culture of continuous improvement
  • Support new technologies and existing/legacy products and production changes though continuous improvement processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • BSc (or higher) in Electrical Engineering/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering (or equivalent degree/practical experience that demonstrates understanding to degree level)
  • Practical experience (3-5 yrs) in a product development environment
  • Experience with PCB development (schematic, layout, prototyping, testing)
  • Ability to lead complex troubleshooting in response to unexpected failures
  • Experience with basic electronics laboratory equipment (oscilloscope, power supply, signal generator, RF test)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of optical systems
  • HF/VHF Semiconductors, RF components
  • Power Electronics
  • Thermal management
  • Circuit Simulators (e.g. Spice, ADS, AWR)
  • Scripting language (e.g. Matlab, python)
  • Experience with Embedded Systems/Firmware Development
  • Mechanical Design experience including experience with Solidworks
  • Altium schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Cleanroom and vacuum systems
  • Sensor and digital signal processing (UART, I2C, SPI, etc)
  • Regulatory experience (ISO 13485, 9001, 17025, 31.260 and related)
  • The base pay for this position ranges from $105,000 - 118,000 depending on the geographic market.
