What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05425, Mechanical Flight Systems, is seeking a Mechanical Technologist in support of Missile and Strike Systems Research and Development Activities related to Mechanical Flight Systems.

The selected candidate will conduct flight test vehicle assembly and integration, payload experiment integration, component and integrated testing, and other test activities related to flight test. They will also support fielding and flight test operations directly providing vehicles servicing a wide array of complex and cutting-edge experiments and technologies.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Support rocket motor, ordnance, and integrated missile systems design and flight test operations.

  • Perform fabrication oversight and assembly/integration of flight hardware

  • Conduct rocket motor/ordnance certification testing, procurement, and inventory maintenance operations

  • Conduct mechanical testing and characterization of individual components and integrated flight systems

  • Conduct assembly and test operations, including those with integrated systems hazards and ordnance devices

  • Conduct remote fielding operations and flight tests, including tests involving controlled ordnance and other hazards

  • Operate within a dynamic, team-focused environment, including multidisciplinary tasks.

  • Maintain a diverse array of industry and government relationships and support partner flight test activities

  • Travel to support program interactions, system integration activities, and flight testing at remote test facilities.

    Due to the nature of the work, this candidate must be able to work onsite.



Salary Range:

$72,800 - $140,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Highschool plus 3 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with Mechanical Ground Support Systems certifications, assembly, and use

  • Mechanical Flight Hardware Inspection, Assembly, Integration, and Flight test experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • E xperience as an explosive's worker at a DOE/Sandia facility or similar government facility.

  • Explosives Training and Handling Experience

  • Demonstrated Propulsion Systems and Ordnance Device Handling, Inventory, Assembly, Integration and Flight Test Experience

  • Working Knowledge of Solid Rocket Motor design and function, including Igniter, Initiator, Propellant, Insulator, Case, and Nozzle Design and Supporting Systems Integration

  • Thrust Vector Systems Experience

  • Attitude Control Systems Experience

  • Hydraulic and Electromechanical System Experience

  • Crane & Rigging and Fork Lift certification and experience

  • Logistics and Hazardous Shipping experience

  • Thermal, Vacuum Testing & Evaluation

  • Vibration & Structural Testing experience

  • Test Equipment setup, operation and evaluation.

  • Computer & Electronic Systems Operation, Evaluation.

  • Validated experience working in a Team Environment

  • Experience working with Center, Division and Corporate safety personnel.

  • Experience identifying and implementing engineered and administrative controls for explosive or mechanically hazardous operations.

  • Experience with planning and/or conducting explosives testing in support of research & development activities.

  • Small Team Leadership Experience



About Our Team:

Our team leads and supports flight and ground test programs associated with the support of the nation's cutting edge needs. Your work enables the development of Missile Defense Systems, Hypersonic Strike Systems, R&D Rocket Systems, as well as Responsive Low Earth Orbit Launch Vehicles. We also strive to work regularly to increase technology readiness level of advanced manufacturing techniques and material compositions, including in flight test applications. We assume responsibility for the design, development, and demonstration of various missile and launch vehicle systems by applying individual technologies and combining them into system level solutions that meet the needs of the customer. Your work will be dynamic and involves extensive interaction within Sandia as well as outside agencies. Our team members are integral flight test project engineers and technologists active in all aspects of vehicle design, integration and launch, mission planning, and post-test analysis. We maintain relationships with active national test ranges such as KTF, PMRF, WFF, WSMR, RTS, VAFB, KSC, and others. Sponsors include US Navy, Army, and Air Force, MDA, DTRA, DARPA, NASA, as well as private industry.

Security Clearance:
