THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking applicants for its 2025 Summer Internship Program located in Mechanicsburg, PA. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in corrections, criminal justice, government administration, and other related areas. The field of corrections is multidisciplinary and deploys the expertise and services of individuals from a wide range of professions.

The DOC Summer Internship provides an opportunity for students to develop their career interests and goals through meaningful, productive work in the public sector. This program is designed to help student interns make a difference in the lives of Pennsylvanians while developing their understanding of the correctional and criminal justice landscape in the Commonwealth. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a DOC Summer Intern, you will work directly with department personnel and leadership across the corrections system to complete a variety of assignments. Your work will promote our mission to reduce recidivism and reintegrate offenders back into the community.

Please review the below list of program areas. In the Supplemental Questions Section, select the top three program areas in which you are interested. (Please note that this is to survey your interest and does not guarantee final placement in your preferred program area.)

Policy and Legislative Affairs/Communications/Secretary's Office
As an intern in this program area, your duties will include promoting staff wellness, analyzing legislation, assisting the communications team, and engaging with executive leadership.

Psychology

Our psychology department provides vital services to those committed to our care. In this department, you will collect and analyze data to improve the DOC's delivery of mental health services to its inmate population, as well as assist in special projects conducted throughout the department.

Administration

The administration intern will be responsible for researching small businesses and conducting outreach. This intern will also assist with budget preparation and contract management, including tracking and compliance.

Standards, Audits, Assessment, and Compliance

In this area, you will assist with annual department policy reviews, accreditation, and inspections. This work will help you develop an understanding of how policy supports operations, budget, training, and public transparency.
Investigations and Intelligence
The investigations and intelligence intern will assist in reviewing phone calls to identify attempts to introduce contraband. In order to conduct investigative operations, this intern will work with specialty areas such as Drug Interdiction and Security Threat.

Reentry Coordination and Justice Reinvestment Initiative

Your work in this position will provide inmates with the skills and resources they need to successfully reintegrate back into the community. By building relationships with providers, you will help us address needs related to health care, housing, substance use disorders, and mental health.

Population Management

As an intern in population management, you will gain an understanding of facility profiles, assist in the implementation of a new assignment application, and conduct reviews for access to criminal history information. You will also perform sentence calculations and coordinate separations from other inmates.

Health Care
To support the DOC's health care initiatives, you will assist in overseeing the medical and dental services that are provided to inmates. This position will help you gain an understanding of the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programming and tracking.

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Investigations

As an EEO investigations intern, you will assist in the establishment and monitoring of policies and procedures for the department's EEO program. You will help triage inquiries from DOC staff, update training materials, and follow up on closed investigations to determine recommendations.

Planning, Research, and Statistics

In this program area, you will assisting in the planning, research, and statistics activities within the department and provide detailed data analysis. Your work will assist in making decisions regarding our short-term and long-term efforts.

Facility Security and Special Operations

In the crucial field of facility security, you will assist in the development and implementation of security policies and procedures for emergency preparedness. You will support our Special Response Teams and our Critical Incident Management program, and you will coordinate monitoring for external and internal inspections.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be working toward a degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Government Administration, or another related field.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
