Director of Nursing Quality and Analytics
Job Summary As a recognized expert in quality data analysis and/or improvement (QI), applies advanced and comprehensive knowledge of professional concepts, industry best practices, and system-wide strategies to lead highly complex projects of substantial size and scope, driving critical impact in nursing practice and patient outcomes across the expanding UCSF Health system. Leads and influences the development, expansion , governance , and innovation of nursing-related system-wide metrics aligning with the Strategic Vision of UCSF Nursing and organizational priorities. Collaborates with department leaders to deploy resources effectively, defining short- and long-term goals across system and tiers to advance nursing practice and improve outcomes.
Translates data into actionable insights, directing resources and implementing programs that improve patient care quality throughout the UCSF network. Support key nursing related analytics for external accreditations, including Magnet, Leapfrog, and aspects of US News and World Report. Leads the deployment of tiered process measures to support cascading active daily management of quality outcomes. Utilizes expertise to design and implement best practices in data collection, analysis, and dissemination, supporting data-driven decision-making, benchmarking, strategic planning, and continuous quality improvement. Builds collaborative relationships with UCSF leaders to enhance nursing practice and outcomes, maintain national certifications, and expand external reporting capabilities to improve transparency.
Drives the creation of governance structures and business plans, ensuring strategic alignment and execution through cross-functional project management. Designs departmental processes to transform large datasets into meaningful, actionable information, empowering patient care teams to achieve excellence. Provides vision and leadership in centralizing data governance, automating workflows, and advancing visualizations to create efficiencies across the system. Delegates complex analytics tasks as needed, ensuring timely and effective support for stakeholders.
Promotes professional development among department employees, fostering a positive environment for growth. Develops and delivers programs to empower tiered teams in the use of data in improvement, leadership, and problem solving. Designs and implements operations within the parameters of patient outcomes, cost-benefit in care provision, and access to healthcare delivery systems. Erroneous decisions or failure to meet goals could result in delays in patient care improvements and increased organizational costs. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $129,600 - $303,800 (Annual Rate). Department Description The Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation supports UCSF Health Nursing Services and has four main divisions: Nursing Professional Development, Nursing Quality and Analytics, Nursing Clinical Practice and Research, and Nursing Continuous Improvement and Affiliate Relations. The Professional Development team includes Nursing Professional Development Specialists who oversee the training and education needs for the Department of Nursing. The Nursing Clinical Practice and Research team includes Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Practice Specialists, who oversee evidence-based practice standards that optimize quality and safety patient outcomes. The Research & Scholarship team includes Nurse Scientists and a Scholarship Development Specialists and who oversee the infrastructure for clinical inquiry, evidence-based practice, research, and innovation. The Nursing Quality Analytics team partners with cross-functional teams to translate data into actionable insights for nursing teams. The Nursing Continuous Improvement and Affiliate Relations team oversees continuous improvement processes and nursing quality with affiliate organizations. Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in nursing or other healthcare profession, or a combination of comparable clinical education and / or experience.
- Five to Seven years of recent experience in a role with comparable responsibilities for lateral collaboration with cross-functional teams to achieve goals; clinical performance improvement; patient safety and harm reduction; management of clinical metrics, benchmarking, and reporting; multidisciplinary performance improvement teams; and engagement of direct care nurses in evidence-based quality improvement and innovation
- Strong knowledge and experience in quality and process improvement methodologies, statistical analysis, and management of large, complex data sets; including development of actionable information from a variety of data sources
- Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills, with expertise in synthesizing data to identify vulnerabilities to support strategic planning for performance improvement and business intelligence solutions
- Highly developed skills and expertise in project management, with demonstrated ability to initiate projects and lead teams, prioritize tasks, and direct projects successfully from inception to completion on task and on schedule.
- Strong knowledge and experience regarding national guidelines for clinical quality metrics and patient safety; nursing quality benchmarking programs, such as NDNQI; and the Magnet Recognition Program _
- Advanced knowledge of methodology for data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Advanced knowledge and skill of related business software, such as MS Excel, SQL, Tableau, or other analytical visualization applications
- Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff at all levels, and external agencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
- Ability to quickly learn and apply knowledge of medical center, HR and/or UC policies and processes; and knowledge of regulatory standards. Ability to apply knowledge to suggest improvements to clinical quality programs
- Highly-developed interpersonal and diplomatic skills to advise and guide teams, and influence all levels of management and staff and to develop strong working relationships with nursing staff and leadership
- Highly-developed skills in written and verbal communications to convey the most complex clinical, technical, and education and training information in a clear and concise manner, and to produce high-quality reports, documentation, and presentations
- Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess highly-complex and urgent problems to develop an expedient path of resolution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of a broad spectrum of professional nursing practices and issues and in-depth knowledge in a clinical nursing specialty area.
- Background in Nursing or 3 years of experience in hospital quality and analytics.
