About the Position

The Native Tree Nursery Coordinator maintains and operates the District's Native Tall Pot Tree Nursery and administers native plant nursery program needs by setting up and maintaining nursery infrastructure; plant propagation and monitoring of plant growth; field inventories and data collection and presentation of findings and nursery information to a variety of audiences. The position oversees/performs tall pot tree plant material production and native plant salvage for various District projects and leads education and outreach efforts related to the nursery and its program objectives.

By contributing to the restoration of native landscapes, this role directly supports flood control efforts, helping to stabilize soil, reduce runoff, and restore natural water management systems.

We Require

  • Two years of program coordination within the landscape nursery industry, including at least one year in desert plant propagation, seed collection, drip irrigation installation/repair, nursery maintenance, identification of arid desert southwest native plant species (native Sonoran Desert plant materials), Native plant salvage, and planting of tall pot trees

  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant biology, or related natural science

  • Experience with handheld GPS devices for plant survival and field establishment data collection

Job Contributions

  • Maintain and operate the District's Native Tall Pot Tree Nursery to: 1) ensure survival and growth of propagated and salvaged plant materials; 2) ensure functioning irrigation system and respond quickly to irrigation issues to ensure survival and proper growth of plant materials; 3) Conduct periodic site visits to observe planting methods, monitor plant survival, and review plant establishment responsibilities; and 4) Perform general housekeeping services and follows safety procedures, etc. to maintain safe, clean, and orderly conditions in the nursery

  • Coordinate propagation and labor requests with O&M, and other District staff to ensure adequate quantities of plant materials available for District projects

  • Coordinate pick-up and delivery of plant materials with staff, District construction managers, and contractors, as requested by project.

  • Maintain an accurate count of plant materials and supplies in the nursery and those delivered to project sites, utilize delivery and pick-up tickets and keep an accurate record of seeding/propagation milestone dates

  • Ensure proper maintenance and servicing and maintain security and accountability for tools, equipment, and materials in the nursery and in the field

  • Present research findings and information on general nursery operations to both general and technically capable audiences, illustrating best management practices and installation techniques

Working Conditions

  • Working in adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time, in both nursery and remote field conditions

  • Use of personal computers, Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), and presentation software (PowerPoint), as needed, for administrative work and nursery operation tasks

  • Must possess or can obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license

  • Able to drive a forklift and use of small handheld equipment

  • Must be able to lift up to 20-25 lbs. occasionally, 20-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-25 lbs. constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties & responsibilities the employee maybe exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
