Job Description

The Vertex Co-op Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Job Summary:

Our department is a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team consisting of biology, engineering, modeling and simulation, and prototyping, centered around developing cutting-edge transformative cell and gene delivery platforms. We are seeking an energetic and self-motivated undergraduate/graduate student to join our Device Research group supporting the Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) program. The individual should have a passion for learning, strong communication as well as excellent organizational skills. The individual will be required to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and will have the ability to utilize a variety of analytical tools and laboratory procedures according to prescribed protocols with an evolving ability to work independently. Prospective candidates should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program in Biomedical, Chemical, Materials Science & Engineering, or related fields.
This position is located in Providence, RI, and will report to the Translational Engineering Senior Scientist.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform material characterization including SEM, TGA, DSC, FTIR, mechanical testing, etc.
  • Support device prototyping activities.
  • Assist in device analytical method development.
  • Collate and interpret analytical data systematically.
  • Maintain quality written descriptions of experiments including standard operational procedures, sampling techniques and study reports in an Electronic Lab Notebook.
  • Regularly meet with project leads and present results.
  • Assist in the management of laboratory equipment including calibration, preventative maintenance, and associated supply inventory.
  • Maintain the laboratories with best practices.
  • Prioritize and plan work activities and adapt to changing prototyping schedules and other dynamic priorities.
  • Comply with all Company Policies including Health, Safety, and Environmental Regulations, Personal Protective Equipment Requirements, and Standard Operating Procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with ability to effectively communicate with multiple teams.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, ideally having maintained a laboratory notebook.
  • Able to self-motivate and work independently or as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask, comfortable with changing priorities.
  • Curriculum in Materials Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related fields.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and knowledge of statistics.
  • Knowledge in polymer and materials characterization.
  • Ability to work with precision instruments.
  • Ability to quantify experimental results and present effectively.

  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before July 2025
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from July - December 2025

Program Dates: July - December 2025, Full Time

Pay Range 20.00 - 35.00 USD/hour
