Job Description

The Agricultural Experiment Station Chemical Laboratories (ESCL) is seeking an Analytical Chemist II.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops, standardizes, prepares, and performs laboratory elemental analyses of food, feeds, biological materials, and related products employ ICP-MS and ICP-OES instrumentation.
  • Assists and/or oversees the preparation of laboratory samples for analyses.
  • Set up, operate and/or supervise maintenance of standard or specialized apparatus or laboratory equipment.
  • Research and/or analyze information and uses standard practices to make informed judgments and recommendations.
  • Perform required internal and external Proficiency Checks to confirm laboratory performance.
  • Prepare complete reports and written analyses as required for all phases of projects.
  • Disseminate reports, policies, and analysis to others throughout the function.
  • Availability for rotational weekend duties with analytical team related to check on analytical instrumentation and basic sample preparation.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a laboratory inventory to sustain ongoing analytical work.
  • Receives instruction, guidance, and/or direction from the laboratory director or designated senior level individual.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Shift

Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with a requirement to participate in rotational weekend duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $51,875 - $76,000;Commensurate with experience.
Grade: GGS-9E

Continuing in the legacy of the State Agricultural Experiment Stations, of Land Grant Institutions, the University of Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station Chemical Laboratories (ESCL), overseen by the Office of the Missouri State Chemist, is charged with both State regulatory functions and providing experimental and analytical support of extension and outreach efforts throughout Missouri, and beyond. Building on the impact that State Chemists have had on many agricultural industries, to include fertilizer, the ESCL, as an open-lab recharge center, makes available a broad spectrum of Official Methods of Analyses for nutritional determinations, agricultural products, and more, that can be seen by navigating this website. Just as importantly, by providing these analyses, the ESCL is ideally positioned to be active in the development of new and improved analytical methodologies.

As an educational, research and analytical service resource of the University of Missouri's College of Agricultural Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR), the ESCL possesses unique qualities that enable it to better conform to the requirements of the ESCL user by providing official analytical services, as well as services that are not-so-routine, or are unique, difficult, require special attention or need methods-development.
